Clarendon County Fire Rescue Chief Michael Johnson and Battalion Chief Billy Ward were honored with the prestigious Patriot Award on July 30, recognizing their outstanding support for National Guard and Reserve personnel.

The award, presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), acknowledges employers who demonstrate exceptional support for citizen warriors. Chief Johnson and Battalion Chief Ward were nominated by Firefighter Coker, a Clarendon County Fire Rescue member who recently returned from a 10-month military deployment.

The Patriot Award is the first in a series of honors given by the ESGR, celebrating supervisors who go above and beyond in their efforts to accommodate and assist National Guard and Reserve members. This includes providing flexible schedules, offering time off before and after deployment, caring for families, and granting necessary leaves of absence.

In addition to receiving the award, Chief Johnson signed the Statement of Support, further committing to uphold the values of the ESGR and continue supporting those who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

Firefighter Coker expressed deep appreciation for Chief Johnson and Battalion Chief Ward, noting their unwavering dedication to both the community and the men and women who serve the country. Their support, he emphasized, has been invaluable, reflecting their commitment to leadership within the department and beyond.

The recognition of Chief Johnson and Battalion Chief Ward underscores Clarendon County Fire Rescue’s ongoing commitment to support both the community and the country, ensuring that those who serve in the military are supported in their civilian roles as well.
