Clarendon County authorities investigating fatal shooting in Summerton

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Summerton man found fatally shot early Sunday morning.

Deputies responded around 7:42 a.m. on April 13 to the area of Washington Street and Louis Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive male lying in a ditch. Upon arrival, deputies located the man, later identified as 32-year-old John Edward Rhames III of Summerton, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office, along with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Crime Scene Unit, joined sheriff’s investigators at the scene. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
