Charles Junior "Charlie" James, 80, husband of Sandy Brown James, died Monday, March 13, 2017, at McLeod Health Clarendon.

Born Jan. 8, 1937, in Kimberley, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Mont Garfield James and Claudia Macil Gibson James. He married Sandy Brown on August 16, 1981. He worked his way up from the mail room clerk in Washington, D.C. to postmaster of Columbia, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and he was district manager in Columbus, Ohio, over a career of 34 years. Charlie loved to watch football and play golf. He attended the Master's for the last 25 years and was a frequent tailgater at the University of South Carolina. He was Gamecock Fan of the Year in 2010.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three daughters, Pam Paliga (Brian) of Powell, Ohio, Donna Jones (David) of Greenville and Anita Ladd (Gary) of Charleston; a son, Robbie Mathis (Danny Mendez) of Lansing, Michigan; six grandchildren, Drew Paliga, Charlie Jones (Amber), Richie Jones (Stephanie), Danny Jones (Tiffany), Meredith Ladd and Madison Ladd; two great-grandchildren, Henry Jones and Sunny Jones; a brother, Bobby James of Manning; a sister, Freda Fox (Carl) of Columbus; and his first wife, Barbara James of Greenville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Marie Hinkle.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Sardinia Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Robert Jolly and John Dodd officiating. Burial will follow in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Todd McDonald, Christian McDonald, Charlie Jones, Richie Jones, Danny Jones and Heow Goodman.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Stephens Funeral Home, and other times at the home, 1277 Doral Drive in Manning.
