Authorities are investigating a boating incident that left one person injured Wednesday evening on the Clarendon County side of Lake Marion.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), a jet ski operator fell into the water and was struck by the propeller of a nearby boat, which was being driven by someone the victim knew. Everyone involved was part of the same group, officials confirmed.
The victim suffered injuries to their arm and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of Thursday, the person’s condition has not been released.
The incident remains under investigation by SCDNR.
In light of the incident, SCDNR issued a reminder to boaters to practice safety precautions on the water. These include always informing someone of your plans and expected return time, wearing a life jacket, ensuring all equipment and the boat are in proper working condition, never operating a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and checking the weather forecast before heading out.
Additionally, officials emphasize that if someone falls overboard, boat operators should immediately cut the engine and throw a flotation device.
