Local event décor is getting a fresh burst of creativity from Martha Burrows, the heart and hands behind Blooms by Burrows. Martha’s passion for floral design is deeply rooted in family traditions and a personal faith that guides every arrangement she creates.
Martha’s love affair with flowers began in her youth. She spent cherished moments with her grandmother, whose green thumb sparked an early interest in gardening. “My grandmother has a really good green thumb, and… we’ve always planted flowers together,” Martha recalls. This early exposure was enriched by her mother-in-law’s talent in flower arranging. “She would just teach me what she knew, and then that’s where my love really kind of grew and evolved,” Martha explained. Even her nanny, who shared a passion for yard work, contributed to what she describes as a generational legacy in florals.
Drawing on years of experience organizing large-scale events, such as the Kingstree Trials and the Taste of Williamsburg. Martha decided to hone her craft by focusing exclusively on floral design for events. “I love any celebration,” she said. “Whether it’s a birthday, a wedding, or a unique gathering, I get really excited about making the space more joyful and meaningful.”
Her signature style embraces a “garden whimsy” aesthetic, favoring natural, airy arrangements that echo the unplanned beauty of a garden. “I like it when flowers look like you just took them out of a garden,” she notes. “I really feel like the way God made things, like whenever you just see wildflowers that pop up on the side of the road. They’re so beautiful and there’s no organization to them. They just come up as they are. I think God’s design is the best design of flowers, and trying to recreate that natural look is what I want to do,” she continued.
After testing her skills with friends and family, Martha officially launched Blooms by Burrows. Balancing a busy household with two children, Martha credits her husband for his unwavering support in managing their family. At the same time, she turns floral visions into reality. The initial business challenges, including filing for an LLC, were part of the journey to develop a unique service in a market where most florists operate only on weekdays. “We really don’t have that many people offering that type of service. You know, someone to actually go on the day of the event, set it up, or even doing the legwork of designing your idea…I’m trying to provide a service that not many people are offering in the area,” she expressed.
Martha offered an honest, faith-driven perspective when asked about her long-term goals. “I am just thankful that I have the opportunity now to do this on the side and really enjoy it as a hobby. For now, I’m just going to see where the Lord takes me, following whatever path He wants,” she shared. Martha believes that every individual is blessed with gifts and that following one’s passion for the glory of God is a calling worth pursuing. “If you’re feeling led, it’s purposeful. And as long as you’re doing it for the right reasons, you’re going to be blessed,” she added.
For Martha, the creative process is as important as the final product. She works closely with her clients through consultations, ensuring that every design reflects the vision and spirit of the occasion, whether that means a meticulously planned wedding arch or a spontaneous birthday surprise. Martha’s belief is simple: no event is too unique to be enhanced by the natural beauty of flowers.
