Bettye Lou Clouse Johnson

Bettye Lou Clouse Johnson, 84, wife of James Henry “Bud” Johnson, Jr., died Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at McLeod Health Clarendon.

Born March 13, 1940, in Blytheville, AR, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Clouse and the late Betty Marie Nokes Clouse. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and the JOY Sunday School class. When her kids were in high school, Bettye enjoyed helping the Manning High School Band with fundraising activities. She will be long remembered as the bookkeeper at the A&P grocery store. Later she was the owner and operator of the Greyhound bus station before retiring to travel and take care of grandkids. She loved her Church and making Christmas shoe boxes with friends. Bettye was an avid Gamecock fan.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years of Manning; four children, James H. “Hank” Johnson III (Kay) of Mt. Pleasant, Pamela Johnson James (Johnny), Tammye Johnson Tidwell (Kenny), both of Manning, and David Christopher “Chris” Johnson of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Johnny M. “Jody” James III (Kristen) of Rimini, Amanda Johnson Lovette (Whit) of Lumberton, NC, William Austin James (Holly), Oliver Johnson James (Stormy), Jonathan Blake Johnson (Adri), all of Manning, Christopher Kenneth Tidwell (Raelyn) of Sumter, Jennifer Johnson Emerson (Taylor) of Waco, TX, and James H. “Jim” Johnson IV (Lauren) of Manning; and twenty-one great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Mary James; a brother, John H. Clouse, Jr.; and a sister, Helen Clouse.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Clarendon Memorial Gardens with Pastor Drew Taylor officiating.

Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service and other times at the residence, 402 Rudy Road, Manning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Road, Manning, SC 29102.
