Bagnal wins Summerton mayor's race

Donald “Mac” Bagnal has been clear since the beginning of his campaign for Summerton mayor that he is just one person who will need the support of council members and the community.

He said Tuesday night that he is taking that view into his next four years in the mayor’s seat after handily defeating Summerton Town Councilman Terrance Tindal in a bid to replace outgoing Mayor Jay Bruner. Unofficial vote totals on Tuesday night had Bagnal well in the lead, with 165 votes to Tindal’s 81.

Votes are being certified at 10 a.m. Thursday.

“I’ve said from the beginning that I’m just one man, and that no one can do this on their own,” Bagnal said. “I’m going to be looking for the support of my fellow council members, and I will definitely lean on Jay’s experience and leadership.”

Tindal said outside the Clarendon County Election Commission headquarters where votes were counted that “God definitely has something else in store for me.”

“I feel at this point that what God has in store for me is what’s right for me,” Tindal said. “I will continue to work in my community to make it a better place for me and all Summerton residents.”

Tindal said he wishes “my opponent the best in his new position.”
