13 fun facts for Friday the 13th

Because why not tempt fate and have fun doing it?

Posted
  1. It has a name!
The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia. If you can pronounce it, you're already braver than most.
  2. The original party crasher:
In Norse mythology, Loki was the 13th guest at a dinner party, and things went very badly. Ever since, 13’s been the odd one out.
  3. Southern wisdom says…
Don’t sweep over someone’s feet, don’t put your purse on the floor, and never start a road trip on Friday the 13th — unless you're asking for trouble.
  4. Famous birthdays:
Tupac Shakur, Alfred Hitchcock, and Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen were all born on Friday the 13th. Coincidence? Or iconic?
  5. Bad day for business:
An estimated $800-900 million in economic activity is lost every Friday the 13th due to people canceling trips and playing it safe.
  6. Lake Marion legend:
Go out on the lake at midnight on Friday the 13th and you might not see a ghost… but you will get eaten alive by mosquitoes.
  7. Baker’s Dozen Exception:
Let’s be real — 13 is only lucky when it comes with donuts. (Thanks, Billy Partin, you get it.)
  8. Flights are safer:
Statistically, flights on Friday the 13th have fewer accidents than any other day. So go ahead — book that trip (and hit "share").
  9. Jason made it famous:
The Friday the 13th movie franchise helped turn the date into pop culture legend — and made over $450 million doing it.
  10. Superstition-free towns?
Some small towns skip numbering buildings or floors as “13” altogether. In ours, we just avoid going into the attic or trusting a cat that stares at nothing.
  11. It’s not always Friday’s fault:
In Italy, 17 is the unlucky number. In Spain, it’s Tuesday the 13th. So... maybe we're just superstitious overachievers here in the U.S.
  12. Newsroom chaos is real:
At The Manning Times, Friday the 13th means printer jams, disappearing files, and someone definitely spilling coffee on the one copy of tomorrow’s paper.
