Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1840 New Zion Road in Lake City, will hold a Supper and Auction on Friday, with supper at 5 p.m. and the auction at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go toward a mission trip to Costa Rica.

LMA JV finishes season first in conference

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats finished their season on Tuesday with a win against Pee Dee Academy in Marion, 6-5. Lundee Olsen was the winning pitcher, with eight strikeouts. Taylor Lea was 3-4; and Brooke Ward was 1-1 with an RBI. Ellen Dinkins, Ashton Rogers and Lundee Olsen each had an RBI. The team finished the season with an overall record of 18-2, and was first in the conference with 5-0.

Monarchs win Region VI-3A Track Championship

monarchsThe Manning High School Monarchs girls and boys teams won the Region VI-3A Track Championship on Wednesday. The girls’ team scored 213, while Darlington was the next-closest with 135. Hartsville scored 50; Lakewood scored 45; and Marlboro and Crestwood scored 20. The boys scored 168 to win, while Darlington scored 123; Crestwood, 106; Lakewood, 78; and Hartsville and Marlboro, 14 each.


Alleged moonshine suspect posts bond

A 33-year-old Manning man charged April 14 for his alleged role in a moonshine distillery in Jordan has posted a $1,000 personal recognizance bond to be released.

harold-anthony-jamesHarold Anthony James of 2155 Alex Harvin Highway in Manning posted bond shortly after his arrest, but the information did not become available on the Clarendon County Public Court Index until recently.

James was charged with unlawful manufacture, transfer or possession of a distillery, first offense, a few days after Clarendon County Sheriff’s deputies seized materials typically associated with the manufacture of illegal alcohol.

Morgan Bacon crowned Miss Teen South Carolina International

Morgan Bacon, 17, of West Columbia, was crowned April 20 as Miss Teen South Carolina International 2014 at Charleston Music Hall. She is the granddaughter of Carolyn Melton of Manning and Billy Melton of Kershaw. She will represent South Carolina from Aug. 1-2 at the International Pageant in Jacksonville, Fla., against other young women from the U.S. and other countries around the world. On April 19, 2014, my wife and I were dining at Shoney’s Restaurant of Manning.  During our meal, a disturbance occurred across the dining room.  A man was choking and his wife was yelling for help.  As a physician, paramedic and firefighter, I responded immediately, and upon my arrival, one of your waitresses had already accessed the situation and was taking action.  (She was just one or two tables away).

Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Looks like some rain is on the way.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 60 percent chance of rain today, with showers and thunderstorms most likely between noon and 2 p.m. Winds will gust from the south at 18 to 36 mph. Tonight’s forecast will most likely see more of the same, with the wind and rain hitting us between 8 and 11 p.m. as temps drop to the mid 60s.




District 2 to hold AVID meeting today

Robert Lee “Bob” Moore

Robert-Lee-MooreSUMMERTON – Robert Lee “Bob” Moore, 73, husband of Anne Elizabeth Robertson Moore, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 21, 1940, in Grafton, W. Va., he was a son of the late Robert Harold Moore and Mary Dryfield Moore. He was a member of St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include three brothers, Terrance Moore of Manning and James Moore and Thomas (Katherine) Moore, both of Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Slusher Moore.

No services are planned at this time.

Shed fire poses problems for firefighters

A shed fire in a secluded area of woods off S.C. 260 about seven miles outside of downtown Manning caused problems for firefighters late Tuesday evening.

Firefighters first responded to the fire about 7 p.m., and were still fighting the blaze about 8:50 p.m. They ultimately called in a bulldozer to get to the fire, which was in a heavily wooded area off S.C. 260 and Bonanza Crossing Road. The property, owned by Warren James, also had several abandoned vehicles, scrap metal and other materials scattered throughout the wooded area, making the blaze difficult to contain.

Brenda M. Bosetti Fix of Wyboo Plantation died Monday, March 24, 2014, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.

She left this world to be with the Lord in the loving arms of her husband, George J. Fix. She was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Alma I. DeBell Bossetti.

LMA’s sporting clays team wins third straight Intermediate Division Title

The Laurence Manning Academy sporting clays team won its third straight Intermediate First Year Division title in a row for the S.C. Youth Shooting Foundation Sporting Clays Tournament Series.

SPORTING-CLAYSReid Norris and J.D. Burroughs both shot 84 out of 100 targets, while Trevor Turcotte shot 82 out of 100, bringing the team total to 250. The three young shooters are coached by Richard Harker. Team Coach Billy Downer said the men are “something special.”
