A Turbeville Correctional Institution guard faces unemployment and criminal charges as of Friday after allegedly bringing cigarettes and rolling papers into the prison. The state Department of Corrections Police Service conducted a lawful search of Arnasia Smith, 25, on Nov. 13, allegedly finding 200 vacuum-sealed Newport cigarettes and two vacuum-sealed bags of brown rolling papers in her belongings. The state Department of Corrections considers tobacco as contraband, and the General Assembly has made it unlawful to bring it into South Carolina prisons. Smith is charged specifically with introducing contraband into a prison as well as misconduct in office. According to prison officials, Smith was terminated after her arrest.
