Ruth Bynum Thrower

Ruth Bynum Thrower was born on Sept. 4, 1929, in Pinewood, to James and Minnie Fordham Bynum. She died on Thursday, March 28, 2019.

She was baptized and gave her life to Christ at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. After high school, she enrolled in Gardner's School of Cosmetology and was a cosmetologist for many years and an Avon representative for more than 50 years.

On Feb. 3, 1957, she was united in holy matrimony to the late James Lee Thrower Sr. and to this union four sons were born, J.L. Thrower Jr., Sidney C. Thrower, David B. Thrower Sr. and Fredrick L. Thrower Sr. Ruth became a faithful and active member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, serving in the capacity as a member of Stewardess Board Number Three, the Women's Missionary Society and the Pastor's Aide Ministry. She was also a member of the American Legion ladies Auxiliary Post 202, the Cosmetology Association-Sumter Region and the Lee-Rico Social Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Thrower Sr.; one son, Sidney C. Thrower; and one brother, Ephraim Bynum.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her sons, J.L. Thrower Jr. of Sumter, David Thrower Sr. (Ruby) of Sumter and Fredrick Thrower Sr. of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Sumter and Vivian Presha of Pinewood; one brother, Joe Pugh of Pinewood; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; an adopted son, Harold (Delthina) Hicks; special cousins, Ervin Canty and Herbert Albert; daughters-in-law, Priscilla Y. Thrower and Sandra Thrower; a number of nieces and nephews; and two caregivers, Bertha Jackson and Sara Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mt. Pisgah AME Church Missionary Society No. 3.

A wake and final viewing will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

The funeral cortege will leave the home at 11:30 a.m.

Homegoing service will be held at noon Wednesday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with Pastor Laddie N. Howard officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 614 S. Harvin St. in Sumter.
