Shaffer requests, receives continuance in Federal court case

At 10:23 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, former Manning City Police Chief Gary Blair Shaffer, supported by his wife, who was also present, stood before Judge Brucie Hendrix at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Charleston. Shaffer’s attorney, Cody Groeber, a Ninth Circuit Public Defender in Charleston, stated they are still awaiting portions of discovery and are still investigating what Groeber called misappropriation of funds. To ensure time to receive all discovery and complete their investigation, thereby allowing preparation of a full defense, Groeber requested a continuance. Hendrix questioned Shaffer, and Shaffer confirmed he was willing to waive his rights to a speedy trial in favor of a continuance. Hendrix then granted the continuance. No firm date was set, although it is likely the case will be heard in July when Hendrix returns to the bench in Charleston. Manning Live will provide more information as it becomes available.
