MUMC holding Lenten Luncheon Monday

Manning United Methodist Church will hold its Lenten Luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Ken Nelson, conference secretary for the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, will be the guest speaker. Tickets are $7 each. Eaddy Grace Osteen was named 2nd runner-up in the Teen Miss Striped Bass Festival Pageant held Saturday at Weldon Auditorium. She was also named Most Photogenic.

Swampcat golf team takes 2nd in four-way match

Laurence Manning Academy took 2nd place Monday in a four-way golf match against Ben Lippen School, Thomas Sumter Academy and Orangeburg Prep at the Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia. Ben Lippen won the non-conference match with four low nine-hole scores from Patrick McClure (37), Austin Murray (38), David Faultley (46) and Jake Fleming (49). The team posted a total of 170.
Laurence Manning Academy had a score of 172. Van Gardner was the low man for LMA with a round of 39. Orangeburg Pep placed 3rd in the match with a four-round, nine-hole score of 178. Corey Antley posted … Read the rest


Freeze means fewer blueberries, peaches

Last week’s deep freeze in the Southeast appears to have nearly wiped out Georgia’s blueberries and South Carolina’s peaches and seriously damaged a number of other crops such as strawberries and apples.

In South Carolina, 85 percent of the state’s peach crop is gone while the small pink blooms remain on the trees, according to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

Up to 80 percent of south Georgia’s blueberry crop is gone, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said after touring the state late last week.

Between the two states, crop losses from the freeze could approach $1 billion, officials said.… Read the rest


Mobile Library canceled Wednesday, Thursday

The Harvin Clarendon County Mobile Library will not run Wednesday or Thursday, according to library Director Charlotte Johnston. Those responsible for driving the vehicle are out for medical reasons.

Baker wins 7 Press Association awards

The Manning Times picked up seven awards Saturday at the South Carolina Press Association’s annual meeting, with former editor Robert Joseph Baker receiving two first place, two second place and three third place honors.
Baker has been with the Times since October 2013, and has nearly 16 years’ experience in journalism. He is currently a part-time staff writer, having reduced his hours in December 2016 due to peritoneal dialysis treatments for end-stage renal disease.
He took prizes in two beat reporting categories, with a first place plaque in Education Beat Reporting for the weekly division, and third for Government Beat … Read the rest


LMA holding baseball camp Saturday

All first- through sixth-grade boys are invited to a one-day Laurence Manning Academy baseball camp being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25. The cost is $10 per person, and checks may be made out to LMA. School varsity players and coaching staff will conduct the camp. All proceeds go directly to the school’s baseball program. JV Lady Swampcats defeat Robert E. Lee

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Robert E. Lee 10-8 on Thursday in Bishopville with Eaddy Grace Osteen going 3-2 and Randi Lynn Holcombe going 4-2 with two RBI. Breanna Hodge went 2-1 with three RBI. McKenzie Truett went 3-1 with one RBI.


JV Lady Saints defeat Dorchester Academy

The Clarendon Hall Junior Varsity Lady Saints picked up a three-inning win over Dorchester Academy on Thursday in Summerton by a score of 15-0. Amberly Way was 1-1 with two RBI and also go the win on the mound with five strike outs. McKenley Wells was also 1-1. The JV Lady Saints are not 6-0 on the regular season.


Blanding given Key to the City

It’s turning out to be a banner year for Manning High School alumni DeShawn Blanding.
Now serving as one of six college students heading the 2016-17 National FFA Officer team, he was recently presented with the Key to the City by Manning Mayor Julia Nelson during a banquet held in his honor at the F.E. DuBose Center.
Blanding is only the second student from Clarendon County receive the distinction of serving as a National FFA officer, the previous having been elected in the 1960s. He was elected in October to serve as the southern region vice-president. He is a biological … Read the rest

The Laurence Manning Academy varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Robert E. Lee in Bishopville on Thursday by a score of 12-0. Baylee Elms went 4-3 with two RBI, while Abbie Beard, Trinity Harrington, Hannah Truett and Olivia Coker all went 3-1. Cora Lee Downer went 3-2 with one RBI.


Monarchs bring record to 5-0 on golf course, LMA finishes second

The Manning High School varsity boys’ golf team defeated three other local teams Thursday at Wyboo Golf Club to bring the team’s record to 5-0 on the season. The team finished with 173 points to Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity team’s 181 points. East Clarendon High School had 224 points and C.E. Murray had 237. Jacob Richburg was medalist with 2-under-par and 34 points. McArthur Bennett of Manning and Rylee Goff of East Clarendon each had 39 points. LMA’s Rutledge DuRant had 40 points, while LMA’s Lexi Bennett had 45 points.

Lorelei Oakley Branham was named 2nd runner up in the Baby Miss Striped Bass Festival Pageant held Saturday at Weldon Auditorium. Harper Danette Hodge was named 1st runner-up, and Emersyn Kay Smith was named the winner, along with being voted Most Photogenic.

Fire damages Walker Street mobile home
