JV Lady Swampcats defeat Orangeburg Prep, advance to Conference Championships

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Orangeburg Prep 31-20 on Saturday to advance to the Conference Championship, which will be held Tuesday against Wilson Hall at the Sumter Civic Center. Katherine Burns was the team’s leading scorer, with 14 points. Breanna Boykin had 11 points, and Audrey Bennett, Trinity Harrington and Payton Davis each had two points.

Saints fall to Holly Hill to end season

The Clarendon Hall varsity Saints fell to Holly Hill over the weekend 70-54 in the Region Tournament, ending their season. Dylan Way led the Saints with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Self and Kameron Earles each had seven points.

CCTC to offer 5th annual Career Fair Monday

Central Carolina Technical College will hold its 5th annual Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Health Sciences Center in downtown Sumter. This event offers Nursing, Medical Assisting, Surgical Technology, Medical Record Coding, Massage Therapy and Pharmacy Technology students, graduates and faculty a chance to meet representatives from hospitals and healthcare facilities to discuss career and employment opportunities. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with prospective employers as well as higher education institutions.

County Council to meet 6 p.m. today

Clarendon County Council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in council chambers in the Clarendon County Administration Building on Sunset Drive in Manning.
Junior Golf Program Director Donald Hardy will give a presentation with the Clarendon County Recreation Department, and council will consider the approval of a bulk water purchase and agreement with the city of Manning.
Council will also hear reports from Chief Financial Officer Lynden Anthony, County Administrator David Epperson and Council Chairman Dwight Stewart.

Charleston man receives 6 years for fatal wreck that killed Summerton man

A Charleston man charged nearly two years ago with the drunk driving death of a Summerton man will serve six years in prison after pleading guilty last week.
Jacob Patrick Ham of 1917 Swift Ave. in Charleston pleaded guilty Thursday to felony driving under the influence where death results before Circuit Court Judge Thomas W. Cooper at the Clarendon County Courthouse, receiving a sentence of 10 years in prison, suspended to six years in prison and two years’ probation.

Eagles finish 2nd in region

The Scott’s Branch varsity Eagles finished second in Region 5 Class 1A with a record of 5-3 behind Bethune Bowman, whose record was 7-1. C.E. Murray finished third with a record of 4-4. Cross finished fourth with a record of 4-4 and Branchville finished fifth with a record of 0-8. Library to close for Presidents Day

Rims, tires reported stolen from Paxville Highway

Rims and tires valued at about $500 were reportedly stolen from a location in the 2600 block of Paxville Highway and reported to deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 26.

The following pleas were heard during a term of Clarendon County General Sessions court before Judge Thomas W. Cooper Jr. between Feb. 6 and Feb. 10.

Carlos Aguila of 821 SW 72nd Ave. in Miami, Florida, pleaded guilty Feb. 9 to financial transaction card forgery, receiving a sentence of time-served. According to information obtained from the Clarendon County Public Court Index, Aguila had been at the Clarendon County Detention Center since his arrest Nov. 17, 2016.

Fraudulent activity in the amount of about $3,000 was reported Jan. 25 to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office at a home in the 10000 block of North Brewington Road in the Gable area of Clarendon County.

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Wilson Hall Friday night by a score of 31-25 to finish conference play undefeated. Katherine Burns led the team with 12 points. Breanna Boykin added eight points, Audrey Bennett added six points, Brice Erickson added four points and Trinity Harrington added one point. The team’s record is now 14-3 heading into the conference tournament. The team begins tournament play 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Orangeburg Prep at Wilson Hall.

Teen accused of vandalizing car

A 39-year-old woman living on Peterson Lane in Manning told the Manning Police Department about 10:10 p.m. Jan. 11 that she saw a 19-year-old Manning woman get out of a Silver Mazda and throw a brick at her 2002 Honda Accord, causing about $500 in damages to the front passenger’s side fender.
