New Year's First Baby: Ayden Jermaine Fitts

Ayden Jermaine Fitts was born 4:54 a.m. Saturday at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, becoming Clarendon County's first baby of 2016.

A son of Apryl Frank and Jermaine Fitts, he has two older siblings, Amiyrah Richardson, 3, and Aniya Brown, 8.

"While it might be surprising that the first baby of the year was born on the second, there were several babies who were born Dec. 31 that just missed being the first baby of the year," said hospital interim CEO Paul Schumacher.

Ayden was 6 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 inches long. Frank said her labor lasted about two hours. The Summerton couple chose Clarendon Memorial as they'd been visiting the Palmetto Women's Clinic.

"We had a good experience there and everyone was nice," she said. "We are happy to have the first baby of the year, but we are surprised that he's the first since he came on the second."

Schumacher said that a gift basket given to the couple contained “all of the basic supplies for newborns. It has diapers, wipes, clothes, cups, a blanket, and other things that the baby will need.”
