Spartanburg native Christopher Davis is one of eight new medical students calling Clarendon Memorial Hospital home for the next year.
The 27 year old is in his third year of studies with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, a school which has a partnership with Clarendon Memorial Hospital to host third- and fourth-year medical students for clinical rotations.
Davis attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, earning a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry.
"I knew I wanted to be in the medical field since about my senior year of high school," Davis said. "I took an anatomy and physiology class and got plugged into a medical science program in my high school. Using science to make people better, I guess that really just appealed to me from that point on."
Davis is the oldest of this year's students, most of whom started medical school directly out of college. Davis, however, worked in medical billing and for a website before continuing his education. He said he hasn't made up his mind about what field of medicine he'd like to practice.
"I'm keeping an open mind," he said. "There are aspects of every part of the medical field that I find interesting. I'm hoping these rotations the next year will help me solidify my interests."
Davis said he is glad to be matriculating at the hospital with many of his friends.
"Most of us have been friends throughout school now," he said. "We hang out together outside of school, so I think we will hang out outside of work and studies here. Some of us have gone to the driving range at Wyboo. We have cookouts. We spend a lot of time together."
Davis also spends time with his wife, Jeri Davis, who will be teaching in Sumter.
