Mayor to model red for American Heart Association event in Columbia

Manning Mayor Julia Nelson is the city's No. 1 cheerleader, but she will be helping out a great cause in our capital city come March 20. Nelson will be one of several South Carolina celebrities to model fashions from Columbia boutiques and department stores for Columbia's Go Red Fashion Show, the brainchild of Columbia City Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, who modeled the show on the American Heart Association's annual event held during Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week in New York. The show was originally planned for Feb. 27, but winter weather delayed the delivery of several pieces planned for use in the show. The city decided to postpone the show until March 20, the next available date at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The fashion show is a new addition to the city of Columbia’s ongoing support for the Go Red campaign, begun by the American Heart Association to increase awareness and raise funds for heart disease in women. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center with a wine and cheese reception. The fashion show will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25, and all proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association. Tickets can be purchased at City Hall (1737 Main St.), the Jabber and Isaac Law Firm (1419 Richland St.) or Carolina Couture (929 Gervais St.). - The State newspaper
