clarendonhallSUMMERTON – Clarendon Hall named two Students of the Month last week, one each for its high school and middle school.

Haleigh Anderson, daughter of Jody and April Anderson, received the high school award, while Eighth-grader Kasey Hinman, daughter of Duane and Laura Hinman, received the middle school award.

Haleigh is a sophomore involved in every aspect of the school, from sports to chorus to volunteer work with fundraisers. Born Oct. 1, 1958, in Manning, he was a son of the late Victor Brown Sr. and Mattie Mae Montgomery Brown.

Celebratory services for Stanley Brown will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at Trinity AME Church in Manning.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Fred Mallett, 1983 Bloomville Road in Manning.

These services were entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Firefighting recruit classmates walk for Baby Banks

baby banks walkManning High School student Taylor Falls and Clarendon Hall student Abby Dara, two current students of the county’s Firefighting Recruit Class, walked Saturday in the American Heart Association’s Lowcountry Heart Walk in Charleston. The girls walked for Banks Bryant, the infant son of Clarendon County firefighter Joshua Bryant and his wife, Ashley. Banks was born June 27 with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Paxville native Tiffany Johnson is partnering with friends in her home community to get donations of shoes during October for Soles4Souls. We posted this piece for her Monday. Collection will run from Oct. 1-31, and the goal is 30,000 pairs. They take all kinds of shoes, including high heels, sandals, boots and athletic shoes. New and used. Shoes can be dropped off in Clarendon County at Manning Early Childhood Center on Raccoon Road. To donate money, visit soles4souls.org/donate.

Child’s bike stolen from Longleaf Drive home

Crime-ReportsA child’s bicycle valued at $119 was reportedly stolen from a home in the 1200 block of Longleaf Drive in the Pine Knoll subdivision in Manning between Sept. 23 and 2 p.m. Sept. 24. The bike was described as a 20-inch white Kent bike with rainbow accents and clear handles.

Esther Durant Briggs, 77, widow of James Earl Briggs, died Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 22, 1937 in the Pinewood section of Sumter County, Opie was a daughter of the late Henry Durant and Vermell Taylor Durant. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth she accepted Christ and was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Pinewood, where she was a lifelong member. She served in many capacities such as usher, mass choir, gospel choir serving as president for both and as a missionary. She retired Read the rest

NEW ZION – Joseph Woods, 93, widower of Charlotte Hampton Woods, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at his home, 1264 Subdivision Road in New Zion. 

Born April 12, 1921, in Turbeville, Bruce was a son of the late Stokes and Sarah Ann Player Woods.

Celebratory services for Joseph Woods will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at the Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning. Burial will follow in Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church cemetery in Turbeville.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The Saints bounced back from last week’s loss to beat region rival Wardlaw and improve to 3-1 in conference play.

The Patriots drove right down the field to score on their opening drive, but the Saints responded with a score of their own with an eight-yard TOUCHDOWN run by Dustin Way to cut the lead to 8-6.
