A 31-year-old Bonneau was taken to the Clarendon County Detention Center last week after his arrest for driving under the influence; child endangerment while driving under the influence; and speeding.

But it was not before he took the last two hydrocodone he had on his person, according to a report from the Manning Police Department.

Gary Lamar Pettigrew, 31, of 613 Whitaker Lane in Bonneau, was charged about 11:01 p.m. Sept. 18, shortly after Private 1st Class William B. Secrist II stopped him for speeding 47 mph in a 35 mph zone.

According to his report, Secrist smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, and also smelled a “strong odor of alcohol” coming from Pettigrew. The suspect allegedly admitted to Secrist that he had been drinking and that he had smoked marijuana at a home earlier.

“The vehicle was occupied by two young girls (about) 6 to 8 years old and two males that Mr. Pettigrew had just picked up from (a local convenience store),” reads Secrist’s report.

During a search Secrist found a bottle of hydrocodone, a Schedule-II controlled substance, that had been prescribed to Pettigrew that day. Of 16 pills, two were left.

Before getting in the patrol car, Pettigrew popped the last two pills, saying he’d had some dental work done and that “they’re my pills, and I can take them if I want.”

Secrist reported that Pettigrew failed field sobriety tests, and that he refused breathalyzer, urine and blood tests at the jail. The jail’s nurse was notified of the hydrocodone intake.

No bond information was immediately available Thursday.
