The Jeffrey and Harriet Lampkin Summer Arts Institute packed Williams Chapel AME Church Wednesday night to showcase local talent.

Jeffrey Lampkin gained a national audience a few years ago from his widely acclaimed performance on “American Idol.”  He currently hosts “The Jeffrey Lampkin Show” on WACH FOX 57, which airs at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays.

Job fair draws large crowd

Sheryl Medvedeff, in purple, fills out jobs applications Wednesday morning at a job fair in Summerton.

Three years ago, Sheryl Medvedeff moved from Baltimore, Maryland to Clarendon County.

A 10-year stint with a debt collection business ended when the firm shut down, so she got a similar job in the medical field. Then she was laid off.

“There’s nothing happening in Maryland anymore,” the 45-year-old said, so she moved south to be with her family. “If I can just get my foot in the door, I can show them what skills I have. Until then, I’m filling out applications.”

soccerThe Clarendon County Recreation Department and Challenger Sports will hold the annual British Soccer Camp from July 28 through Aug. 1. Age groups, times and prices include: Ages 3-4 – 8-9 a.m.; $75. Ages 4-5 – 8-9:30 a.m.; $100. Ages 6-9 – 9 a.m. to noon; $123. Ages 10-16 – 9 a.m. to noon; $123. LAKE MARION – Ron Cunningham’s golf cart isn’t hard to miss around the inlets of Lake Marion near his home on Lake Arbu Drive in Wyboo.

He has an American flag on one side and a Pittsburgh Steelers flag on the other.

dr. keithWith many families enjoying and participating in outdoor summer activities, it is important to take the appropriate precautions to protect children from the potentially harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Although we all need some sun exposure to provide Vitamin D which helps our bodies absorb calcium for stronger and healthier bones it doesn’t take a lot of time in the sun to reap this benefit.

District 5 results: No clear winner … yet

candidatesWhile Julius Dukes Sr. is currently in the lead in Tuesday’s runoff for the District 5 seat on Manning City Council with 48 votes, Gloria Frierson is behind just a single vote.

And the two challenged votes to be counted Thursday by the city Election Commission could change all that.

The commission – Chairwoman Bea Simon and members Margaret Walker and J. Wilder – will meet 10 a.m. Thursday to check those votes and certify the final results.

With all votes counted, Julius Dukes is winning the District 5 seat on City Council by one vote. He garnered 48 votes to Frierson’s 47.

Election officials have not yet confirmed the results or a clear winner. State law requires an automatic recount if the results are within 1 percent range.

There is currently a discrepancy in the numbers. will update as soon as possible.

Susie Mae Johnson Williams Mellott

Susie Mae Johnson Williams Mellott, 91, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born May 15, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Johnson and Madell Bagnal Johnson. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine (Jim) Farmer of Alabama; a son, Norwood (Marilyn) Williams of Manning; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas David Williams.

A funeral service for Susie Mae Johnson Williams Mellott will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, … Read the rest

Seven Clarendon County men are currently wanted by the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office on drug charges.

Maj. Kipp Coker said Tuesday that six men were arrested in what he called a “round-up” of various individuals who had made drug buys or sales to undercover deputies. He said the following seven men are wanted as a result of the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call (803) 435-4414.

The Clarendon County Narcotics Unit has arrested six Clarendon County men for various drug charges.

Capt. Ricky Richards said Tuesday that the men were essentially part of a “round-up” performed by deputies in the last few days. Those charged included:

Two wrecks on S.C. 261

The S.C. Highway Patrol is currently responding to two wrecks on S.C. 261, one with injuries.

The first happened about 4:39 p.m. in front of Shoney’s on Paxville Highway. Reports indicate there are injuries, but do not say to what extent.

The second wreck happened about 4:55 p.m. near the intersection of Greeleyville Highway and Poston Lane. This one has no injuries.

Crime-ReportsA Manning woman spent two days at the Clarendon County Detention Center recently after allegedly hitting a man with a hammer.

Pamela Renee Harvin, 35, of 1221 Westwood Drive, was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature July 12, and was released July 14 on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond. According to reports from the Manning Police Department, a man told police that Harvin hit him that day, causing a “bleeding wound” on his upper arm. He said Harvin was going to hit him again, but he took the hammer from her.

Voting ‘extremely light’ in District 5 runoff

YourVoteCountsA little more than 3 percent of registered voters eligible to vote in the runoff to decide the District 5 set on Manning City Council.

Julius Dukes Sr. and Gloria Frierson were both the top candidates in the special election held July 8 to fill the unexpired term of the late Gregory Witherspoon, who died in March. Votes will be counted tonight.

Poll manager June Brailsford said only 18 of 555 registered voters living in District 5 had voted by 2 p.m. Tuesday. Polls are open through 7 p.m.
