Summerton festival celebrates landmark court case

The upward trajectory of the Civil Rights Movement can be traced to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision 60 years ago that changed the course of history. This weekend will see celebrations in Summerton to honor Briggs v. Elliott, which was one of five cases rolled into Brown v. Board of Education, the case that overturned the accepted practice of school segregation. The festival's parade starts 9:30 a.m. Saturday and goes throughout downtown Summerton. Attendees can expect arts and crafts, food vendors, information booths and the Black Cowboys from Rembert. The Rev. Nelson Rivers and Dr. Lonnie Randolph of the state NAACP will speak 4 p.m. Sunday at a commemoration ceremony at Liberty Hill AME Church.
