Clarendon NAACP holds annual King Walk

Posted

A group of about 25 members of the Clarendon County branch of the NAACP marched from the north side of the Clarendon County Courthouse to Trinity AME Church on Rigby Street on Sunday, singing “We Shall Overcome” on the way.

The afternoon sunlight filtered into the sanctuary through 10 beautiful stained glass windows as the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program began.

More than 100 celebrants filled the church’s pews, standing while the Rev. Charles Smith, associate pastor of Providence Christian Church, gave an invocation.

The Rev. Malachi Gibson, pastor of Trinity, read from Amos 5:24-25, saying, “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings 40 years in the desert, O house of Israel?”

Gibson said that it was with those words that “Dr. King built many of his sermons.”
