The Incumbent Sorrell defeats Knox for Probate Judge

Posted

In the Clarendon County Probate Judge Election, Margaret Sorrell faced off against Peggy Knox. In the end, Sorrell came out victorious, securing herself an additional term in that office. Sorrell sat down for an Editors Office Interview to discuss her campaign, as well as her goals for the upcoming year.

Congratulations on winning your election! How did you feel when you got the news on Tuesday night?

When I got the news on Tuesday night, I felt relieved, as it was a very close race. I was humbled and grateful to have won the primary. I was so thankful for all the votes and the support throughout the campaign.  I was, however, surprised at the low turnout, and I couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed that so many voters did not participate in the process.

What do you think some of your biggest strengths were in your campaign?

I believe my biggest strength in the campaign was most likely my experience as the incumbent Judge and my being an attorney.

What changes do you have in mind for your next term, if any?

For the upcoming term, I hope to implement some technological improvements. I want to try to serve some of our users via the internet, if at all possible.  This will involve some coordination with our IT department, of course, but it is happening in other locations, so it may be something we can do here.

Are there any previous goals that you plan on finishing in your next term?

I plan on continuing to provide friendly, compassionate, and helpful service to the public. I believe the Court is more “ user-friendly” than ever, and I hope to build on that for the future. I hope to continue closing old files and continue educating the public on the Probate process whenever I am given the chance.  I have always been willing to speak at any gathering, if my schedule permits, to further the public’s understanding of Probate Court.

What do you think the citizens of Clarendon County need in a Probate Judge?

The public needs a Probate Judge with the relevant legal experience and education to do the job.  The Probate Judge must understand the Probate laws.  Everything that takes place in the Court is set forth either by statute or by policies of the South Carolina Court Administration. The Judge must keep abreast of all the requirements enumerated by these two bodies. Furthermore, the citizens need a judge who can solve problems, communicate effectively, preside over hearings, guide applicants through the processes, and run the Court as its department head.

What makes you the best woman for the job?

I am the best person for the job because I am experienced in Probate laws and processes.  I have a juris doctorate degree, and many years of experience in this Court.  When paperwork is filed, I am able to review the documents and evaluate them; I can communicate with attorneys regarding documents or hearings. I can discuss questions or concerns with parties involved. My experience and education are very valuable in this position.

Lastly, what is one message you would like to get out to the citizens of Clarendon County?

I want to thank the citizens of Clarendon County for their continued confidence in my ability to hold this position, and assure them that their probate matters will continue to be handled with care and integrity.
