Risher to face off against Johnson for House Seat 64

Posted

Cindy Risher won the Republic Party Primary for the South Carolina House of Representatives Seat 64 last Tuesday, June 9. Risher will face off against Kimberly Johnson, who represents the Democratic Party, in November. Risher sat down for an Editors Office Interview in support of her campaign.

Congratulations on winning your primary! How did you feel when you first heard the news on Tuesday night?

I was thankful for each and every voter who took their time to go to the polls and vote for me. I was truly amazed at winning my primary by a 3-to-1 margin. Unless you’re a long-time incumbent, it’s almost impossible to win by much.

What do you think some of your major strengths were in your initial primary campaign?
There were several:

  • Having a great team was key, especially my campaign manager.
  • A clear and strong message about creating jobs, improving local schools and keeping our communities safe.
  • My experience from two winning school board races.
  • Understanding the issues that mattered most from my time on the school board and other community organizations.

What things will you change in your campaign going forward, if any?

As the current situation allows, more door knocking and face to face conversations with constituents is something I feel is critical. Building relationships with people is important and trust is the key. It’s difficult to do this over the phone or in a written correspondence because the personal factor is missing. COVID made this difficult but I’m hoping that will soon change.

What do you think the citizens of Clarendon County need in a Representative?

I believe most people want someone who will respectfully listen to their concerns and then address those concerns with their peers in the House to improve opportunities for their constituents.

What goals do you have should you win the election?

To work with local officials, local businesses and state government to:

  1. protect jobs and create new jobs
  2. promote education reform
  3. advocate for public safety
  4. push for affordable housing options

What makes you a stronger candidate for this position than your opponent?
I will bring a balance to our Legislative Delegation. My years of experience in public service as an educator, volunteer and community activist as well as my many years of service to my Party in leadership positions has prepared me to be a strong leader in the House.

What are some of the biggest changes you would want to see during your term?

I would like to see this District come together and unite as a family. I would like to see the educational opportunities expand to offer all students the same opportunities here that students have in the upstate or in Mt. Pleasant. I would like to see economic development and growth of small business, which is the backbone of any economy. This includes our farming community. South Carolina has seen amazing growth and record prosperity but little of that comes to this area, even though we have a major interstate, a huge and popular lake and railroad access.

Finally, what is one message you would like to get out to the citizens of Clarendon County?

I never expect anyone to do my work for me or to do anything I myself wouldn’t personally do. I do not consider myself to be above or below anyone else. I am a woman of faith who relies on God to give me guidance and direction. I will take this same perspective with me to the State House.
