Paxville author does book reading

Posted

Kim Cantey Davis attended a book reading and signing on March 3rd at the Fleming Felder Head Start Center in Paxville for her children’s book, The Adventures of David and Papa. Being a Paxville native herself, Davis attended school at the Head Start Center. She expressed how deeply important it was for her to return to her hometown and work with Kristie Adger Franklin from the school to plan the readings and signings at both locations.

The event was organized at the perfect time, since the day before was National Read Across America Day. Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on Mar. 2, the birthday of the infamous Dr. Seuss. The annual event is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading established by the National Education Association. The Adventures of David and Papa not only inspires kids to read but to dream up their own adventures with their grandparents.

The Adventures of David and Papa was published in January of 2022 and captures the relationship between a little boy and his papa. The adventures featured in the story were inspired by true events, and the characters are based on Davis’ grandson and husband, Terry Davis. David is a funny, delightful kid who is full of energy and spends a lot of time at his grandparents’ house. This book displays the relationship between David and his Papa and the fun they have together in a kid-friendly narrative.

According to the book description, grandparents play a very significant role in the lives of their grandchildren. They help with the development of children when they spend time together. Grandparents also help with teaching valuable lessons and provide wisdom from their experiences in life.

When asked for comment, Davis said, “I am a youth advocate and love empowering youth and educating kids about bullying prevention and youth violence through my nonprofit organization, The Don’t Be A Bully Foundation.  I am also passionate about supporting and giving back to other women who are fighting against breast cancer.”

She truly enjoyed reading books with her grandson and was inspired to write The Adventures of David and Papa while going through cancer treatment. Her husband, grandson, and niece, Layla, would entertain her in her bedroom following long hours of chemo and be the shining light to brighten her days during her cancer journey. During this trying time in her life, Davis still found reasons to smile and laugh because of her family. The concept for the book came to her mind while watching them play games and be there for one another. The title of the book was originally written in a page from her journal in 2018. The story is completely inspired by real life events that she and her husband enjoy doing with her grandson.
