Painting of historical church returned to Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church

The return of a decades-old painting of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church from Pete Surette and his nephew Andrew Spivey added a unique moment of history and connection to Pastor Appreciation Month celebrations. Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor of the historic church, accepted the painting, which depicts the church’s familiar brick structure and features a sign installed in the 1980s, a detail indicating its likely period of origin.

Spivey, who lives in Greenville, discovered the painting while browsing at a yard sale and immediately recognized the church as one he had often seen on drives to visit family on Goat Island. “I couldn’t let it go,” Spivey told Surette. “I’ve passed that church so many times going to my grandparents’ house.” He then asked his uncle to deliver the painting back to Summerton.

For Surette, who works with Patriot Healthcare, the moment symbolized both a personal and community gesture of appreciation. “I’ve been reaching out to Dr. Johnson to thank him for his service, so this felt like a perfect time to reconnect him with this piece of the church’s past,” Surette said. “It’s really something special to bring it home.” He explained that Patriot Healthcare, a company assisting homebound patients, often collaborates with churches to provide support for congregants needing in-home care.

As pastor for over 42 years, Dr. Johnson has led Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church through significant growth and outreach, overseeing extensive renovations and community initiatives. “This will hang in our vestibule,” Johnson said, noting that the area serves as a gallery for historical pieces. “It’s a blessing to receive it, especially during Pastor Appreciation Month,” he added with a smile.

The church’s history, dating back to its formation in 1885 when ex-slaves purchased the building from the White Baptist Church of Summerton, is rooted in resilience and hope. “The past of Taw Caw is about resilience,” said Dr. Johnson, reflecting on the congregation’s journey. Today, Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church continues to embody its legacy, with Dr. Johnson maintaining his commitment to both preserving its heritage and serving the present needs of Summerton’s faith community.
