Dear Editor,
The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a budget bill that quite frankly will devastate residents of Clarendon County. The House is proposing cuts that will gut Medicaid and Snap and put the lives of people we know in harm’s way. Did you know that more than 181,000 thousand residents in House District 6 rely on Medicaid/Snap to survive and that 46% of those households have children under the age of 19?
More than 50,000 residents receive SNAP (food), 46% of those households have children, more than 40% have an elderly household member and more than 48% have a household member with a disability. These numbers illustrate the harm that will come if the House budget plan is passed with the proposed cuts. Not only would these cuts impact South Carolinians health and well being, it is projected cuts to these programs could trigger the Loss of a Million-Plus Jobs, lead to reduced economic activity, and less state revenue. These are just some of the impacts South Carolinians could see if these cuts are enacted.
Please urge your Congressional delegation, Rep. Clyburn, Sen Graham and Sen Scott to oppose cuts to these vital programs.
Sincerely,
Lorraine Woodward
