Joseph “Joey” Heyward Moore, 68, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at his home.
Born March 7, 1953, in Rock Hill, he was a son of the late Marion “Manny” Moore and the late Louise Nichols Moore. You cannot come into Manning, SC, without passing the Manny Moore Memorial Highway. Manny Moore started a successful business, and his son, Joey, took that legacy to the next level. Prior to retiring, Joey Moore was the owner and operator of Moore Oil Company. Joey Moore served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Manning Rotary Club, and was a member of the Clarendon County Economic Development Board. President of the SC Petroleum Marketers Association, he was instrumental in bringing in businesses to the local area. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning where he served as an Elder.
Joey attended Clemson where he was a member of the KA fraternity and a lifetime member of IPTAY. He loved tailgating with beloved hometown friends and his family. His blood ran orange, but he never wore orange garb to a game. He was a little superstitious that if he wore orange it would somehow bring his tigers bad luck, and he didn’t want that. One time he broke his rule and wore an orange shirt to a game, and his tigers started losing. Joey couldn’t have that, so at half time, he changed shirts with another fan. The purple shirt did the trick, and the tigers got the win against Louisville. From that day on, Joey Moore had a new rule. He could sport orange during the week, but on game-day Saturday, only white or purple for him. Joey wanted the best for the team he loved and the people he loved.
Joey Moore loved playing golf at Shannon Greens Golf Club in Manning, SC. A small wager here and there kept things interesting. Joey Moore loved the game of golf, but he loved being with his friends even more. He loved sharing his passion for golf with his grandchildren. Not too long ago, his grandson, Heyward, made a hole-in-one at Wyboo Golf Course. Just a few days later, Joey made a hole-in-one at Shannon Greens. Doesn’t get much better than that.
Dove, duck, turkey, and deer, Joey Moore loved to hunt them all. In the 70’s and 80’s, Moore hunted around Manning in what he called the swamp. He shot many ducks at Pine Island and at his duck pond at Goat Island at Santee. Later he started travelling to Arkansas, where he would shoot the limit every day. When his son Heyward was 17, Joey took him geese and duck hunting in Canada, and a new tradition was formed. Moore loved to hunt and loved sharing that passion with his children and grandchildren. Some of the best Moore-family memories were made in the fields, on the ponds, and in the woods.
Of all these things, Clemson, golf, and duck hunting, Joey Moore loved his family and friends the most. His Fourth of July parties at Santee were legendary. He was a gracious host to all and a generous behind-the-scenes benefactor to many. Moore will be remembered for his big heart and his fine ability to crack a good joke and tell a tall tale.
He is survived by three children, Heyward Moore (Nancy) of Manning, McCain Moore of Charleston, and Grayson Moore of Manning; three grandchildren, Heyward Moore III, Emma Moore and Brenleigh Moore; a sister, Verna Moore of Apex, NC; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Moore.
Services will be private.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning.
