Historic Pleasant Grove School to host Mother’s Day fundraiser

A piece of Clarendon County history is getting new life, and the public is invited to be part of the journey.

The Pleasant Grove Restoration Project Committee is hosting its annual Mother’s Day Fish Fry fundraiser on Saturday, May 10, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the historic Pleasant Grove School, located at 1012 Joe and Marie Road in Alcolu.

Pleasant Grove School holds the distinction of being the first public school for African-American students in Clarendon County. Built in 1933, the school served the Alcolu area until 1953, when it closed due to the South Carolina equalization program.

Efforts to restore the building began in earnest in February 2023, led by the Pleasant Grove Restoration Project Committee. Chairman of the Board Ray Evans said the group is making steady progress.

“The building is well on its way to being restored to its former glory,” Evans said. “This event is not only a chance to enjoy great food, but also to support the preservation of an important part of our community’s educational and cultural legacy.”

The fundraiser will feature a classic Southern fish fry and a community flea market, giving visitors the chance to shop, eat, and learn more about the school’s history and the restoration efforts underway.

All proceeds from the event will go toward continued renovations and community programming. Organizers encourage local residents and history enthusiasts alike to attend and help preserve the landmark for future generations.
