Free summer meals available for children and teens across state

Free, nutritious meals are now available to children and teens across South Carolina as part of the state’s annual summer meal service programs.

From June through August, more than 1,200 locations statewide are participating in the Summer Break Café (SBC) and Seamless Summer Option (SSO), both federally funded programs administered by the South Carolina Department of Education.

“Summer meals are one of the most vital ways we support South Carolina students year-round,” said State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver. “We are incredibly grateful to the school districts and local partners who will work tirelessly to ensure no child goes without a meal this summer.”

The programs are open to all children and teens age 18 and under. Meals—ranging from breakfast and lunch to dinner and snacks—are being served at schools, parks, libraries, churches and community centers. Serving times and meal offerings vary by location.

Some rural sites may also offer grab-and-go meals to provide added convenience for families. These non-congregate options are available only at approved locations.

Last summer, nearly 3.2 million meals were served across South Carolina through these programs.
