Dr. Angela Bain named Interim Superintendent for Clarendon School District 4

At a Special Called Board Meeting on June 3, 2020, the Clarendon Four Board of Trustees unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Angela Bain as Interim Superintendent for the 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Bain’s official start date is July 1, 2020. She will spearhead the development of the new district that will open on July 1, 2021.

Dr. Angela Bain began her career in education in 1980, as a teacher. After almost 40 years in education, she is currently the Superintendent for the Chester County School District. Before becoming Superintendent, she was one of the Deputy State Superintendents of Education at the South Carolina Department of Education. Her goal is making connections and bringing people together on behalf of the children in our state. She truly believes in preparing our students for college and careers.

Angela has taught at Converse College and the University of South Carolina preparing future teachers and school administrators.

Her resume includes time spent as a teacher, college professor, middle school assistant principal, middle school principal, director of the South Carolina Department of Education’s Office of Teacher Evaluation, Assistant Superintendent, and Chief Human Resources Officer.

She has served on the National Board of Examiners for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation process for teacher preparation institutions of higher education in South Carolina and around the country.

She believes that educators should prepare students for the real world and the real jobs of today and tomorrow. Doing what is in the best interest of children is what drives her. She likes to say that her life’s mission has been as a Champion for Children!

In 2014, Dr. Bain was awarded the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Personnel Administrator of the Year. In March 2013, she was selected and participated in the Harvard Graduate School’s Institute for Superintendents. In 2017, she was invited to participate in Furman University’s Riley Institute for Diversity, and she is a member of the South Carolina Education Policy Fellows program.

She holds a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policies from the University of South Carolina, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina, a Masters in Education from Converse College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Winthrop University (College).

Dr. Bain holds a South Carolina license in a number of content areas. Her administrative license includes the areas of Elementary and Secondary School Principal/Supervisor and as a Superintendent.

Board Chair Jason Newsome said, “Clarendon 4 will be well served with Dr. Bain as Interim Superintendent. She has an extensive resume and a wide range of experience. The Board recognizes the importance of this decision and feels very comfortable with Dr. Bain at the helm.” Newsome also stated, “I think it’s important to point out that this decision was unanimous. I think that’s a good indicator to the public that the Board is functioning well together.”
