DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE (VEHICLE VS MAILBOX)
On March 1, 2025, at 6:31 a.m., Clarendon County Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a dark Honda on the side of the roadway on Old Georgetown Road just past Manchester Drive, which is in the city limits of Manning. Dispatchers advised officers that the caller stated the Honda hit a mailbox and a female inside was not moving. A deputy arrived almost immediately, and was quickly followed by an officer from the Manning Police Department. Upon arrival, the officer from the Manning Police Department witnessed the deputy attempt to wake the female driver up. The female was removed from the vehicle. It was determined that the female did not have a medical issue and she woke and said she left a birthday party in Sumter and was headed home to Charleston. Officers spoke with the female, later identified as Kiana Cox, and just could not get an understanding of how she got off I-95 to Charleston and onto Old Georgetown Road. Eventually Cox was able to tell officers she stopped her Honda to use the restroom. It appeared when Cox re-entered her car, she drove into a solid mailbox, pushing it forward and causing paint damage to her front bumper. Shortly after she struck the mailbox, she was unable to go forward anymore and instead of reversing it, it appeared she went to sleep. Cox said she was not drunk and the officer said okay, I need you to say your ABCs starting with D and ending with M. Cox stated she understood. She began saying the ABCs, but she started with E instead of D, and she continued all the way to Z instead of stopping at M. The officer informed Cox that Highway Patrol would have to be contacted. The officers remained with Cox until SC Highway Patrol arrived on scene. A Highway Patrol trooper conducted a field sobriety test and then placed Cox under arrest for DUI without incident. An officer remained on scene until the tow truck arrived.
