Chocolate 'n Biscuits

Posted

I absolutely love Christmas. I love every single thing about it; the crisp air, (if we are lucky), the family, the music, the gifts, the food, everything.

I have always taken this holiday very seriously, as soon as thanksgiving dinner is over, I instantly queue up my favorite Christmas songs and get right into the spirit. What I love more than anything though, is the traditions.

Starting out with December 23, I have started a new tradition the past couple years. Me and a few close friends like to celebrate what we call Christmas Eve Eve. I see it as a time to spend with the family you choose. I also always make sure to get them all a gift to show them how much I appreciate all that they do for me. After that is squared away, I get to focus all of my time on my family.

I was lucky enough to be born into a family that believes in gathering around a table and spending time together. Every Christmas Eve we all meet at the First Baptist Church in Turbeville for communion, and afterwards, we all go back to Nana and Papa's for a Christmas Eve dinner. After that we light a fire and all of us – My grandparents, their three children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren – sit and open presents that we have gotten for each other.

Back when I was younger, my grandparents would even get someone to dress up in a Santa suit to come and visit us on Christmas Eve, and tell us that he would soon be back with presents.

After this came the most exciting part, waking up on Christmas morning. I used to wake up as early as 6:00 a.m. to find out what Santa had brought me. I eventually grew out of that, but now we always have a niece and nephew staying with us that make sure they act as personal alarm clocks for us all.

Every Christmas morning for as long as I can remember, my mother cooks one of the best dishes I have ever had in my life: chocolate and biscuits.

Chocolate and biscuits consists of my mothers families made-from-scratch biscuits, and Hershey's chocolate powder cooked into a sauce. Serve this dish up with some cold milk and it would make anyone happy.

My grandparents on both sides visit on Christmas Day as well, bringing us our stockings. My Nana likes to keep hers traditional, and every year you will find an assortment of fruit, as well as box of Cracker Jacks, (with the prize inside of course).

I guess the only thing I can say now is to repeat how much I love Christmas, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
