Community members gathered on April 17 for a solemn candlelight vigil in Clarendon County to honor victims and survivors of child abuse, marking National Child Abuse Prevention Month with a renewed call to action.
The vigil, organized by the Clarendon County Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program, brought together child advocates, volunteers, and residents to remember those affected by abuse and to highlight the importance of prevention and intervention efforts. Held at dusk, the ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need to protect vulnerable children and support those who speak on their behalf.
Speakers at the event emphasized the collective responsibility of the community to recognize and report signs of abuse and to create safe, nurturing environments where children can thrive.
“Everyone has a role in ensuring our children are safe,” said Brandi Johnson, regional recruiter and trainer for the GAL Program. “The presence of volunteers and advocates tonight shows that our community is united in standing up for those who cannot always speak for themselves.”
The Guardian ad Litem Program continues to seek volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children involved in family court proceedings. GAL volunteers are trained to represent a child’s best interests and ensure their voices are heard during what is often a difficult time.

The vigil concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony, symbolizing hope for healing and a future free from abuse for all children.
