Betty McElveen Cockerill, 85, widow of William Marion Cockerill, Sr., died Saturday, September 5, 2020, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. 

Born May 22, 1935, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Henry Goodman and the late Frances McElveen Goodman. Betty was a faithful employee of the Sumter Item for over 20 years, working as a receptionist. She was proud to be the lady of a Noble for many years and happiest when she was with family. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church. 

She is survived by three children, Lynn C. Cockfield and Patty C. Isom (Glenn), both of Lake City, and Jerry J. Carter (Alicia) of Manning; four stepchildren, William M. Cockerill, Jr., Janice Johnson (Jimmy), Kathleen Howell (Ronnie), all of Sumter, and Daniel I. Cockerill (Belinda) of Ft. Mill; seventeen grandchildren; and forty great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jack McElveen officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.
