A grass woods fire behind a home in the 1400 block started by a burn barrel threatened two structures early Thursday afternoon. Firefighters were able to put the blaze out before it did any major damage, other than to the grass behind the homes. imageimage

Johnson reacts to Haley’s speech

Kevin Johnson was a little disappointed. “I was looking for more substance,” said the Manning Democrat and senator this morning in summing up his thoughts about Gov. Nikki Haley’s state of the state speech last night. Johnson said he agrees that fixing our roads and bridges is a top priority. Tying conditions to increasing the gas tax is wrong, he thinks. Lady Cats split against Orangeburg Prep

Last night in Orangeburg, Laurence Manning Academy’s Lady Swampcats JV squad beat the Lady Indians, 34-30. Olivia Coker was top scorer with 13 points.  Abby Patrick put up 9 points and snagged 17 rebounds. The varsity squad fell 39-58. High scorer was Courtney Beatson with 15 points. LMA next plays Florence Christian tonight at home.

Wreck with no injuries on I-95

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting a wreck with no injuries in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the 131 mile-marker. Traffic will likely be slower during this time.

LMA girls B-team falls to Wilson Hall

The Laurence Manning Academy girls B-team fell 49-14 to Wilson Hall on Wednesday night in Sumter. Katherine Burns scored four points for the team. The team’s record is now 4-3 on the season.

The Laurence Manning Academy boys B-team defeated Wilson Hall 45-15 on Wednesday night. Wyatt Rowland was the high-scorer, with 14 points. J. Godwin scored nine points, while Chase Lee put up seven points for the team. Seth Stamps and Luke DeCosta had six points each. The team’s record is now 6-1 on the season.

County School Board reinstates Fleming

Clarendon County School Board Chairman George Wilson confirmed Wednesday night that board members have reinstated Clarendon School District 2 board member Robert “Bobby” Fleming. Fleming was suspended in mid-December, about a month after the Greeleyville Police Department leveled charges at him for impersonating a law enforcement officer and petty larceny of campaign signs. Charges for the signs were later dropped, and Fleming paid a small fine for the impersonation charge.

County K-9 unit apprehends wanted man running from checkpoint

A 36-year-old Clarendon County man with nine outstanding drug warrants more than a year old was captured Saturday night by the K-9 unit of the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office. Ricky Coard was initially stopped a traffic checkpoint in the vicinity of the Rev. J.W. Carter Road and Alex Harvin Highway, according to Capt. Boat, motor, golf cart batteries stolen from Summerton home

A 61-year-old Charleston man told deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office about 11:12 a.m. Jan. 17 that someone broke into his other home in the 9000 block of St. Paul Road in Summerton and stole $3,300 worth of items. The man said he had not been to the home in about six months when he stopped by about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 on his way home to Charleston from North Carolina. Wayne Mitchum

SUMTER – Wayne Mitchum, 69, husband of Susan E. Mitchum, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Ernest Mitchum and Fannie James Mitchum. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, where he served as the Worship Leader. Wayne was an accomplished musician and guitar player and was the co-founder of the group, Chapter 2. He was also the emcee at the Gospel Music Barn on Thursday nights.
