Clarendon firefighters rush to help with Lake City blaze

LAKE CITY – Gavin Jackson with the Florence Morning News reported Jan. 21 that the Clarendon County Fire Department was one of several agencies from three counties and other municipalities who worked a “four-alarm fire at Nan Ya Plastics south of Lake City for 90 minutes” that day.

The paper quoted local fire officials, who said the response did not match the size of the fire.

“Ten times more people showed up than what was needed, but I will say this: I’d rather have too many than not enough,” said plant Director of Safety, Health and Environmental Control Adrian Harris. … Read the rest


St. Mary’s to celebrate CENTENNIAL

St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton will celebrate its 100th Anniversary with holy mass at 11 a.m. Sunday. A historic marker will be unveiled at noon in front of the church, and will be followed by lunch in  the St. Matthias Parish Hall.




HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNOUNCES SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

Born Nov. 2, 1968, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Andretta Houston Harrison and the late Deacon Joe Nathan Harrison. She was a graduate of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind in Spartanburg. In her youth, she attended Grace Christian Church in Manning.

MANNING – Jerry Ivy Strickland, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

 

Born Oct. 24, 1940, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Maxie Lee and Coleen Strickland Lee.

 

Survivors include a son, Jerry W. “Tom” Strickland (Linda) of Manning; three daughters, Debra Barrett, Chevy (Frankie) Breedin and Margaret Strickland, all of Sumter; three brothers, Barron Strickland of Pamplico, Eugene (Barbara) Strickland of Alcolu and Danny (Vicky) Lee of Timmonsville; a sister, Mary Mathis of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 13, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of Mamie Trawick Brooker and the late Charles t. Brooker. He attended the Wissahickon School System in Ambler, Pa., and Montgomery Community College in Blue Bell, Pa. He was employed by Atlantis Petroleum Industries, and later as a cashier. James made his dedication to Jehovah in 1985 and serves as a pioneer and ministerial servant.
