Manning High Monarchs fail to make playoffs

The Manning High School Monarchs failed to make the region playoffs on Tuesday night, losing their respective games to the Hartsville High School Red Foxes. The Lady Monarchs had a close game, ending 79-62. The Monarchs lost by a wider margin, 74-42.

Dorothy-Wuest-001SUMMERTON – Dorothy June Hayes Wuest, 82, wife of Roland Herman Wuest Jr., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 9, 1932, in Gastonia, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Carl Otis Hayes and Hazel Marie Wellman Hayes. She was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a son, Fred Knight (Martha) of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Gigi Brantley (Mark) of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Monica Marie Knight of Dallas, Texas; and a brother, Cecil Maurice Hayes (Sara) of Rockport, Texas.

power-outageSantee Electric Cooperative Community Relations Manager Adrel Stone Langley announced earlier that the company still has 1,703 customers without power in Clarendon County. She said she hopes members will all be back on the system by Wednesday.

Cleveland Walker, husband of Phillis Ellison Walker, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at his home.

Born July 11, 1928, in Davis Station, he was a son of the late Hector and Anna Magwood Walker and stepson of the late Carrie Williams Walker and Anna Richburg Walker.

Survivors besides his devoted wife of 64 years include three daughters, Mary (Charlie) McDonald of Manning, Carrie Walker of Columbia and LaDonna Gist of Anderson; a granddaughter raised in the home, Shala Taylor of Columbia; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

Santee Electric still helping 1,500 without power in Clarendon County

power-outageSantee Electric Community Relations Manager Adrel Stone Langley just told The Manning Times that 1,501 of its Clarendon County customers remain without power as of Monday night. The utility cooperative announced earlier today that it is working around-the-clock to have power back to all its customers by Wednesday.


LMA Varsity Girls defeat Wilson Hall, moving on Tuesday to Conference Championship

lma_shieldThe Laurence Manning Academy Varsity Girls basketball team defeated Wilson Hall 60-42 on Monday afternoon, with Emily McElveen, Perrin Jackson and Maddie Reyes leading the team with 14, 13 and 12 points each, respectively. They will move on Tuesday to the Conference Championship against Orangeburg Preparatory School. That game will be held 6 p.m. at the Sumter Exhibition Center.

READY_SHERMAN_HYATTSUMMERTON – Sherman Cecil Hyatt, 80, husband of Jean E. Hyatt, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

 

Born March 2, 1933, in Cambrake, W.Va., he was a son of the late Roy G. Hyatt and Rexie M. Gilbert Hyatt. He moved to Michigan and retired from American Motors, eventually moving to South Carolina, where he enjoyed the warm weather, riding his motorcycle and fishing.

 

He was proud to have been a master of Builders Lodge No. 563 in Dearborn, Mich., and a member of St. Peters Masonic Lodge in Manning.

Deacon Levi Walters

Deacon Levi Walters, 76, husband of Jeannette Robinson Walters, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at his home, 1211 James Martin Road, Manning.

Born April 4, 1937, in Summerton, he was a son of the late John Henry and Hattie Stroy Walters. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Friendship AME Church in Silver. He was employed with Carroll McCain Freight Inc., a heavy-equipment company, for 25 years. He later relocated to Washington, D.C., and was an entrepreneur in construction.

Santee Electric aims to have power fully restored by Wednesday

power-outageKINGSTREE – More than 500 additional line workers are now assisting power restoration efforts in the four counties powered by Santee Electric Cooperative (SEC).

Though service has been restored to more than 30,000 of the more than 44,000 customers affected by what Gov. Nikki Haley has called a historic and devastating ice storm, crews are working overtime to restore electricity to more than 14,000 consumers, according to a release from the company.

Gov. Haley: 51,491 SC residents without power still

gov nikki haleyGov. Nikki Haley announced via Facebook this morning that 51,491 South Carolinians continue to be without power today due to the effects of Winter Storm Pax. In Clarendon, Santee Electric is still reporting more than 4,100 without power as of Monday morning.

She said volunteers are needed throughout the state to help move debris to the side of roads. She said the focus is on homes of the elderly or those with special needs throughout the state.

Never use an over or stove to heat your home.

If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away – things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.

County gives update on power outages

power-outageCounty Administrator David Epperson said earlier tonight that about 4,650 Clarendon County residents remain without power on Sunday night. He said Duke Energy has two households without power, while Black River has 27. The hardest-hit system, Santee Electric Cooperate, still has 4,608 without power, according to Epperson.

Manager of Community Relations Adrel Stone Langley told The Manning Times earlier today that crews are working around-the-clock to get residents in four counties – including Clarendon – back up and running.

 


SAT/ACT WORKSHOP ANNOUNCED FOR MANNING HIGH

SAT_ACT_PREPThe deadline to sign-up for an upcoming SAT/ACT workshop, which will be held March 13 at the Manning High School lecture hall, is March 7.

The workshop will be conducted by the One on One Learning team, and will cost $20 for MHS students. There are a limited number of vouchers available. They will be based on student need and academic standing. Fees must be paid to a school guidance counselor by March 7.

The workshop will benefit students taking the ACT on April 12, and the SAT on May 3.
