Red Cross tips to avoid kitchen fires

american red crossThe Sandhills Chapter of the American Red Cross recommends the following tips to help residents avoid kitchen fires:

Check food regularly and remain in the home while cooking.

Enforce a “kid-gree zone” in the cooking area, and make children stay at least three feet away from the stove.

Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove, oven or any appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.

Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen.

NC Santee Electric lineman injured near Foreston

Authorities are asking residents to be careful driving around the county after an out-of-state lineman for Santee Electric was injured on Sunday after an incident with a speeding car.

The North Carolina man has remained on the job. Steve Pendleton, was working on U.S. 521 near Foreston when his crew heard a car heading toward them. The car hit another, spun around, and a fellow lineman pulled Pendleton out of the way.

Grazed by the vehicle, Pendleton broke his kneecap. He has remained on the job, however, according to Santee Electric Community Relations Manager Adrel Stone Langley.


Clarendon County grant opportunities for 2014-15

Born March 6, 1930, in Clemmons, N.C., he was a son of the late Lester Wilburn and Jessie Pauline Hutchins Doub. He moved to Columbia at 6 months of age. Mr. Doub was a member of Santee Baptist Church, serving his Lord wherever needed. JV Saints play hard against Andrew Jackson Academy, come up short in Region Tournament

The Clarendon Hall Junior Varsity Saints lost a close game, 36-26, on Tuesday evening at home to Andrew Jackson Academy, ending their hopes for a Region Championship.

“Words can’t express how proud I am of this group of young men,” said Coach Storm Bennett. “Not because of our win-loss record on the season or because we finished as the conference runner-ups in the regular season and tournament, but because the guys gave total effort during games and practices all season.”

“No one can say that the other team won because they outworked us,” he added.

Fire destroys one structure, damages others at lake

A Wednesday afternoon brush fire spread to five homes off Little John Drive near Lake Marion, destroying one home and damaging the others.

Clarendon County Fire Department officials said no one was injured in the blaze. Firefighters responded to multiple incidents on Wednesday where brush fires spread due to strong winds. Fire Chief Frances Richbourg urges residents to think twice about lighting up in windy, dry conditions.

ELIZABETH, N.J. – Carrie Yvonne Ragin died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth.

Born July 7, 1941, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Edward Elijah and Sarah Woody Watson-Ragin.

Survivors include three devoted sisters, Sarah Lillian (Henry Lee) Ragin-Smith of Philadelphia, Pa., Gardenia Ragin-Scott of Jersey City, N.J., and Deloris Ragin-Jones of Elizabeth, whom she lived with for the past 30 years; a brother-in-law, Leroy Hooks Sr. of South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Mary McCloud-Ragin of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

LUGOFF – Harry Gene Connor, 58, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at his home.

Born Dec. 8, 1955, in Manning, he was a son of the late Patrick Joseph Connor and Mary Lee DuBose Connor.

Survivors include four brothers; Joseph Lee Connor (Carolyn), John Henry Connor (Brenda) and Charles Ray Connor, all of Manning and Gerald Glynn Connor (Gloria) of Sumter.

ALCOLU — Marion Elliott Dantzler, 71, husband of Elaine Blackwell Dantzler, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at his home in Alcolu.

Born March 16, 1942, in Lone Star, he was a son of the late James Dantzler and Rutha Mae McFadden Dantzler Davis, and the stepson of Ernest Davis.

Evelyn York died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 24, 1924, in the Bloomville community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marion Cantey and Eather York.

Survivors include two sons raised as her own, Willie York and Franklin Thompson, both of Manning; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mazie York of Manning.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Wallace Gibson, 85, widower of Lillian Irene Bryant Gibson, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at his home. 

Born May 28, 1928, in Brundidge, Ala., he was a son of the late Robert “Bub” Gibson and Elizabeth Grey Goolsby Gibson. He was raised in Columbus, Ga., and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Georgia Pacific as a shipping and receiving clerk, and was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church.

This little guy was found roaming around the Briarcliff area of Manning earlier today, and is safe at a home on Rudy Road. Please call (803) 435-8422 if you believe this little boy is yours. He appears to be an older Chihuahua and is not fixed.
