santee electricSantee Electric Cooperative sent a release just a bit ago thanking customers for their patience in the aftermath of Winter Storm Pax, and ask that customers still without service continue to be patient. The text reads:

Santee Electric Cooperate reported 44,226 total members affected by Winter Storm Pax that moved through the service area this past Tuesday. Of those outages, about 9,000 were in Clarendon County, 9,000 were in Florence County, about 12,000 were in Georgetown County and about 12,000 were in Williamsburg County, crippling the electric system similar to the devastation that was left by Hurricane Hugo. Clarendon 2 joins nurse registry

Clarendon School District 2 has announced its selection for the South Carolina Immunization Registry for School Nurse Access during the past few months.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control will now expand its initial pilot program to the remaining school districts who volunteered, including Clarendon 2 and 12 other districts in Anderson, Barnwell, Calhoun, Charleston, Chester, Darlington, Fairfield, Horry, Kershaw, Lancaster and York counties.

Citadel announces Fall 2013 Dean’s List

citadel-commons2The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, has named two Clarendon County natives to its Fall 2013 Dean’s List.

Students must earn a 3.2 or higher GPA, with no grade lower than a C for the previous semester’s work, and also be registered for 12 or more semester hours to be so honored.

Those named included Lewis Hartwell Warr of Alcolu, a business administration major; and William Blake Duke of Manning, a civil engineering major.

The Manning Times would like to congratulate these students on their achievements.

 


JV Saints defeat Patrick Henry

The Clarendon Hall Junior Varsity Saints won 49-33 against Patrick Henry on Saturday at home, with Matthew Corbett leading the team with 12 points and 11 rebounds and five steals. JOhn Lewis had 14 points and four steals. Al Hobbs had eight rebounds and 15 points. Jordan Self had four points., and Will Corbett put up four points and four steals.

Clarendon Hall will face the No. 1 seeded Andrew Jackson Academy on Tuesday at Clarendon Hall in the Region Tournament Championship. The teams have faced each other twice, with the JV Saints winning once earlier this month.


Santee Electric still helping 4K customers without power

power-outageSantee Electric Cooperative is reporting more than 4,000 customers in Clarendon County tonight without power. District 1 Trustee Sonny Sanders says that crews are working around-the-clock to fix the problem. Sen. Kevin Johnson, D-Manning, said earlier that he has spoken with officials and is “convinced that they are working as hard as they can to restore power.”

“Most of their service area is in a very rural area that was heavily damaged by trees,” Johnson said. “I know it is a hardship for anyone who has no power, and I hope that they are reconnected very soon.”

LMA JV defeated by OP

lma_shieldThe Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity teams unfortunately could not pull off wins against Orangeburg Preparatory School on Saturday. The JV girls lost in a close game, 31-30, with Cora Lee Downer leading the team with 10 points. The JV boys also lost in a close game, 40-35, with Seth Green leading with nine points. Both games were the last for the teams this season.


Joe Iverson Cutter

Joe Iverson Cutter, 87, husband of the late Janie Alice Tobias Cutter, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Joe CutterBorn May 26, 1926, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Nelson Cutter and the late Lelia Shepherd Cutter.

Survivors include three sons, three sons, Jerry Iverson (Lou) Cutter, Jackie Ronald (Cathy) Cutter and Jimmy Ray (Pamela) Cutter, all of Manning; three grandchildren, Joseph Bryan Cutter, Justin Brian Cutter and Kelsey Lynn Cutter; a great-grandchild, Joseph Bryan Cutter Jr.; and a special friend, Martha Johnson of Mullins.

County updates numbers for power outage

power-outageClarendon County Emergency Management Director Anthony Mack just sent manninglive.com updated numbers for homes without power within the county. While Santee Electric has reported more than 20,000 homes in its four-county jurisdiction without power, only 4,743 of those homes are in Clarendon County. Duke Energy has 1,451 homes without, and Black River has 560 without power.

Crews continue to work around the county, and Manning Mayor Julia Nelson reported earlier that Duke Energy has provided even more crews for Clarendon County.

Has anyone lost puppies or know anyone who has in the Pine Knoll, Rudy Road and Gibbons Street area? They’re a solid black Chihuahua and a tan-and-black schnauzer? Both are very well-groomed and both appear to have a family.

TURBEVILLE – The Rev. William Claudie Osborn, husband of H. Alene Osborne, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.

Born Feb. 27, 1927, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late W.H. “Buddy” and Clarica Dennis Osborne. He was a graduate of Turbeville High School and attended Bob Jones College, now Bob Jones University, in Greenville. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Panama.

He served as the assistant superintendent of the Freewill Baptist Conference Pentecostal Faith under four different superintendents, and also as missions director and secretary.

LUGOFF – Harry Gene Connor, 58, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at his home in Lugoff.

Born Dec. 8, 1955, in Manning, he was a son of the late Patrick Joseph Connor and Mary Lee DuBose Connor.

Survivors include four brothers; Joseph Lee Connor (Carolyn), John Henry Connor (Brenda) and Charles Ray Connor, all of Manning and Gerald Glynn Connor (Gloria) of Sumter.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Home Branch Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Patrick G. Goodwin officiating.

6K in Clarendon still without power

power-outageMore than 6,000 Clarendon County are still without power Friday night due to the winter storm that blew through the midlands earlier this week. Emergency Services Director Anthony Mack said work will continue, and that the county will update residents on the progress at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Striped Bass Festival events announced for 2014

striped bass festival.jpgThe Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce has announced the following events for the 2014 Striped Bass Festival, which will be held the first weekend in April.

 

The Striped Bass Festival Pageant will be held April 3 at Weldon Auditorium in Manning. The opening ceremonies will follow April 4 at the Clarendon County Gazebo on Keitt Street. Super Saturday will be held April 5, and the Poker Run will be held April 12.

 

More detailed information will be provided at a later time.

 


Lost pups in Pine Knoll area

Has anyone lost puppies or know anyone who has in the Pine Knoll, Rudy Road and Gibbons Street area? It’s a solid black Chihuahua and tan-and-black schnauzer? Both are very well-groomed and both appear to have a family. Manninglive.com will post a picture soon.
