Isaac Bowman, 89, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Fiffa and Sarah Bowman. James Luther Brooker, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston. Born Nov. 13, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of Mamie Trawick Brooker and the late Charlest T. Brooker. The family will receive friends at the home, 1672 Steven road in Summerton. These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Frank M. Evans, 38, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at his home in Manning. Born Feb. 21, 1976, in Freeport, Long Island, N.Y., he was a son of Jonathan and Leola Hammond Evans. The family is receiving friends at the home of his parents, 145 Shady Lane in Kingstree.

Manning Council of Garden Clubs replants courthouse Camellias

Despite cold winter weather, and perhaps because of a rainy December and January, two Professor Sargent camellias replanted in front of the Clarendon County Courthouse through the efforts of the Manning Council of Garden Clubs and Custom Landscaping of Manning are currently thriving, according to President Kathy Cramer. The flowers were removed from their previous location directly aside the courthouse after planned renovations began last year. Marie Land of the Camellia Garden Club said the trees were planted in that location after Hurricane Hugo from roots from trees planted on the courthouse grounds in the 1940s by Betty Johnson. East Clarendon student earns highest FFA distinction

By BERT BEASLEY SPECIAL TO THE MANNING TIMES LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A graduate of East Clarendon High School recently received the highest honor an FFA student may achieve. Dylan W. Duncan of Gable was recently awarded the American FFA Degree at the National FFA Convention in Louisville. The degree is given to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). Manning Early Childhood Center in Clarendon School District 2 will hold early enrollment for the 1014-15 school year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 28-31. To be eligible for admission, a child must be 4 or 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2014. Parents must have a certified birth certificate, a Social Security card, a South Carolina immunization certificate, proof of residence and Medicaid card or proof of income. Suspect in Greenwood killing nabbed during Clarendon traffic stop

BAKER SUMMERTON – Clarendon County sheriff’s deputies detained the suspect in the shooting of a Greenwood man during what would have been an otherwise routine traffic stop on Jan. 9. Gary William Guffey, 34, of 201 Bent Creek Road in Greenwood, was stopped about 10 p.m. for a broken headlight, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Department, and was quickly detained due to his suspected role in the October shooting death of a 42-year-old man.
