Theresa-TerrellTheresa Helen Emerson Terrell, 73, wife of Thomas Aubry Terrell, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 12, 1940, in North Hornell, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Howard John Emerson and Margery May Perkins Emerson. She was a member of the board of directors for A Second Chance Animal Shelter and the Basset Rescue Crew of the Southeast. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include seven children; a stepson; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Goodwin of Manning. LMA Varsity Soccer Team victorious against Thomas Sumter Academy

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats Varsity Soccer Team won against Thomas Sumter Academy in Sumter on Feb. 27, 6-0. Olin Robinson put up one goal and one assist for the team, while Frank Drose had two stellar shots on goal. Will Wannamaker had three goals with five shots on goal. Austin Stout had two goals with two assists, along with 10 shots on goal. Andrew Compton had seven saves in goal. Gov. Haley proclaims Severe Weather Awareness Week

Nikki Haley announced Monday that March 2-8 will be designated Severe Weather Awareness Week. “Severe weather can occur year-round in South Carolina and can often lead to the loss of life and millions of dollars in damage to property,” according to an announcement from the Governor’s Office. “Recent storms have shown that a well-informed public educated in necessary preparedness measures is less likely to suffer personal injury, loss of life and property damage in the wake of severe weather.” Haley encourages all South Carolinians to participate in a statewide tornado drill today, and to work together to… Read the rest


Softball B-Team wins first game

LMA ShieldThe B-Team girls from Laurence Manning Academy won against Orangeburg Prep in their first softball game of the season on Monday, with a final score of 15-0. Liz Hussy was the winning pitcher. Trinity Harrington went 3-3 with a double, and Keeley Hulse also went 2-2. Ann Bethea Barwick was 2-2.  

Tuesday has a cold weather outlook

cold weather tuesdayCold temperatures as low as the mid-20s on Monday night will continue into Tuesday, which will stay in the mid- to low-40s, according to weather.com. The site predicts a cloudy day with a slight chance of rain. The high should top out at 44 degrees, and winds should be about 10 to 15 miles per hour. The cold weather could continue into Wednesday, according to forecasts.    




Clarendon Celtics go undefeated

clarendon_celticsThe Clarendon Celtics, a recreational basketball team consisting of 10- to 12-year-old boys and girls, had an undefeated season before their final game on Thursday night. Self-defense class for women and girls tonight, March 27

A free self-defense class for women and girls (old enough to stay home along and/or babysit) will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at Clarendon Baptist Church, 1780 Main St. in Alcolu. The same course will be taught 6-8 p.m. March 27 at the F.E. DuBose Center should you not be able to make it tonight.  

Dorothy Jean Pugh Anderson

ready_dorothy_andersonDorothy Jean Pugh Anderson, 86, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Agape Hospice in Columbia with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren by her side. Born Aug. 6, 1927, in Williamston, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Roy and Iona Dye Pugh.  She was a devoted member of Manning First Baptist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and the Clarendon Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Dorothy retired from Schwartz Brothers Insurance in Chicago, Ill., at age 55 and from Clarendon Memorial Hospital at age 78. Dorothy dedicated her life to helping others. Eugene “Gene” Conyers, 74, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at his home, 1366 George Conyers Road in Manning. Born Dec. 7, 1939, in the Halleytown section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Deacon George Conyers Sr. and Corine Martin Conyers. He attended Clarendon County public schools. Survivors include a son, Marcellus (Deloris) Conyers; three grandchildren, April (Gerall) Singleton, Amanda Conyers and Marcellus Deon Conyers; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Creola Morgan; and two brothers, Leroy Conyers and Ulysses (Francis) Conyers.
