Commission checking eight voters

The Manning Municipal Election Commission is checking eight voters which Sharmane Anderson claims were denied the right to vote in the District 5 special election held July 8.

Clarendon County Voter Registration Director Shirley Black-Oliver is currently testifying.

The Manning Municipal Election Commission is currently consulting its attorney, John Moyland, over evidence presented Tuesday morning by Sharmane Anderson, a write-in candidate for District 5 who came in third in last week’s election.

Anderson says that voters were turned away from the polls and denied their right to vote.

SUMTER – Johnny David McCall Sr., 65, widower of Myrtle T. McCall, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1948, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Alex and Gladys Anderson McCall.  He was retired equipment operator.

Survivors include a son, Johnny D. McCall Jr. of Sumter; a son-in-law, Stewart Avery of Sumter; three brothers, Jackie McCall of Charleston, James McCall of Hopkins and Jerry McCall of Sumter; a sister, Carolyn Jones of Hopkins; a grandchild, Ryder McCall Avery of Sumter; and a number of other family and friends.

check-presentation-from-golden-chickGolden Chick of Manning owner Cory Wright presented Cynthia Bradham of Jordan Crossroads Ministry Center – Haven of Rest a check for $500 on Monday morning at the restaurant, which opened in April. It is Wright’s second location, the first being in Sumter. Bradham said the money will be used to purchase the T-shirts for the group’s 3rd annual walk to raise awareness for domestic violence, which will be held in October.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Harrison of North Charleston celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2014, with their family.

Alfred and Carolyn Harrison married in 1954 in Lynchburg. Mrs. Harrison is the former Carolyn Simpson of Manning. Alfred worked at the Charleston Air Force Base, the Charleston County School District and the City of North Charleston. Carolyn retired from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

CHS unveils ‘My Health Portal’

The new portal will “empower patients and their families to take a more active role in their care by providing easy, secure access to their hospital health information and online communication with Clarendon Memorial Hospital staff,” according to a release from Clarendon Health System.

SUMMERTON – Tony Leslie Berry, 75, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at his home.

Born March 21, 1939, in Saluda, he was a son of the late Mark Boyd Berry and Martha Bradley Berry Dawkins and was raised by his mother and stepfather, the late Boyce Dawkins of Stoney Hill. He was a 1958 graduate of Prosperity High School, a U.S. Air Force veteran, the owner and operator of Tony’s Beauty Salon in Mt. Pleasant and later Tony’s Hair Corral in Summerton.

William Ray Flemming, 93, widower of Evelyn Matejik Flemming, died July 12, 2014, in Columbia.

Born March 25, 1921, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William and Lucy Hicks Flemming. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. A graduate of Clemson University, he remained a loyal Tiger throughout his life, was active in IPTAY, was a lifetime member of the Clemson Fund and the Clemson Alumni Association and served on the University Board of Visitors.

A man charged July 4 with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14 was denied bond last week by Clarendon Magistrate Judge June Briggs at the Clarendon County Detention Center.

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office alleges that a 13-year-old girl who ran away from home between May 27 and 30 was found with Victor Raynor, 31, of 1107 McDuffie Road in Pinewood, at his home. A 34-year-old woman told the girl’s mother where she was, and the mother took her from the home to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, who transferred … Read the rest


District 2 promotes Judy Holmes, Otis Reed

promotion2Manning Primary School Assistant Principal Otis Reed was promoted to interim principal of the school on Monday morning by Clarendon School District 2 Superintendent John Tindal. He will be filling the shoes of former principal Judy Holmes, who was herself promoted to be director of gifted and talented programs and special projects for the district.

red-cross-auction-5Sandhills Chapter of the American Red Cross volunteer Jennie Geddings said Friday that the organization’s 9th annual auction didn’t just bring in the most money for the organization.

“It was also our best well attended,” she said. “We counted more than 100 people overall. That’s the most we’ve ever had.”

Held at Manning United Methodist Church on June 26, the auction featured everything from juicers and antiques to specialty items like a concrete sculpture of the state of South Carolina by Smith Construction of Sumter.

SUMMERTON — Willie Thomas Black, 87, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at his home.

Born July 25, 1926, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Joseph Black Sr. and Nell Bethune Black. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was joined in matrimony Jan. 22, 1946, to the late Mamie Ruth Riley, and from this union seven children were born.

William Calvin Sr., 74, husband of Ellanor Taylor Calvin, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 8, 1939, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Henry Calvin and Ella Owens Calvin. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth he became a member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees there. He worked as a farmer for Samuel Durant for more than 50 years until his health failed.
