Crime-ReportsThe 63-year-old maintenance man for a property in the 1100 block of Fleming Circle in Manning told Clarendon County sheriff’s deputies about 8 a.m. Sept. 11 that someone shot out two windows with what appeared to be a BB gun, causing about $400 in damages.

There’s a small red sign in the driveway of a defunct massage business off Alex Harvin Highway that was supposed to become a haven for rescued dogs. That sign, a formal cease and desist order, is at the crux of a legal battle pitting Virginia “Ginny” Turcotte and her husband, Rick, against the county and the planning commission.

The Turcottes started Forgotten Tails Animal Rescue, which brings in abandoned or discarded dogs and finds new homes for them – usually up north – after they’ve been neutered, spayed and examined by a veterinarian. They also own Gintek Inc., a business … Read the rest

act-satA SAT/ACT workshop will be offered Oct. 21, 2014, at Manning High School. This one-day, six-hour workshop is led by experienced, top-scoring tutors from One-on-One Learning. The workshop will prepare students for attaining high test scores! Test tips and strategies will be presented in a motivational, exciting presentation. The cost is $35 for the 50-plus students. You do not have to be a Manning High student to participate, but space is limited, so act quickly. ESTILL – The Clarendon Hall JV football team continued its winning ways Thursday night, as the Saints defeated the Patriots of Patrick Henry Academy by a final score of 14–12, avenging the only loss of the season in Week 2, and giving the Patriots their first loss of the season. The JV Saints record now stands at 4 & 1.

Manning man kicks MPD officers, facing assault and drug charges

suspect-williamsA Manning man is facing several serious charges after allegedly fighting with officers during a traffic stop last week near West Huggins Street and Oakland Avenue in Manning.

Melvin Junior Williams, 31, of 726 Barnwell St. in Manning, was charged about 10:40 p.m. Sept. 20 with resisting arrest, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, liquor law violations and speeding.

MANNING-SEALThe Manning Youth Council is now accepting applications from students in ninth through 12th grades who attend Laurence Manning Academy or Manning High School and who are Clarendon County residents. Students may also be home schooled. The Youth Council will serve Manning by planning and implementing social, educational, recreational and other activities for the youth and communities. Brooke Ward had seven kills, six serve points and three blocks. Haleigh Lewis had six serve points.

Born Oct. 25, 1977, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Willie M. Rogers and Mary Montgomery.

Funeral services for Shannon Richardson will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at Hayes F. & LaNelle J. Samuels Memorial Chapel in Manning.

The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 109 Rural Ave. in Manning.

Volleyball: JV Lady Saints remain undefeated against Patrick Henry Academy

fleur-de-lis-red-mdThe Clarendon Hall junior varsity volleyball team remained undefeated Thursday, picking up a win in Estill against Patrick Henry Academy 2-1.

Scores were 25-17 and 25-21. The Saints were led by Mackenzie Norman, who had 12 service points. Sydney Wells and Mallory McIntosh each added 10 points.

The JV Lady Saints are now 8-0 on the season and also 8-0 in region play. They play again Thursday at home against Andrew Jackson Academy.

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy varsity volleyball team lost 3-2 Thursday against Thomas Sumter Academy in Sumter.

Courtney Beatson had 14 kills, 11 serve points and four blocks. Sara Herbert had 13 kills and four blocks. Maia Grams had 10 serve points.

Scores were 25-7 (L), 25-23 (W), 25-15 (L), 25-23 (W) and 16-14 (L).

Tennis: Swampcats can’t outplay Holly Hill

tennisSept25The Laurence Manning Academy varsity tennis team was no match unfortunately for Holly Hill Academy on Thursday, with Hannah Graham being the only player to win a set of eight matches against HHA player Peyton Meyers, 8-4.

In doubles, Swampcats Amanda Newman and Elizabeth Collins routed Sarah Becker and Harlee Bozard 8-3.

JV Swampcats rout Cardinal Neman

football-registrationThe Laurence Manning Academy Middle School football team recorded a 44-32 victory over Cardinal Newman Thursday afternoon at Chitwood Field in Manning.

Brewer Brunson scored on runs of 46, 61, and 41 yards. Brunson scored his final touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Jake Jordan. Garrett Black scored on runs of 30 and five yards. Black also scored on a 75-yard kickoff return.

Defensively, Cody Reaves, Wyatt Rowland and Jake Jordan each recorded eight tackles on the night. Rowland also had an interception.

The Swampcats return to action next week when they travel Thursday to Hammond School of Columbia.

OBITS-BACKGROUND-2-smallerSUMTER – Virginia Alma Green, 104, of 507 W. Calhoun St in, Sumter, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at her home.

Born July 8, 1910, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Luther and Alma Broadway Green.

Miss Green was a graduate of Turbeville High School and Winthrop College and received a master’s of education degree in 1948 from the University of South Carolina. She taught school for 42 years in South Carolina, having taught in Allendale, Kingstree, Florence, Columbia and Sumter, from which she retired.
