Clarendon School District 1 will conduct free vision, hearing, speech and developmental screenings as part of a child find effort to identify students with special needs. The screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Thursday of each month at Summerton Early Childhood Center. SUMMERTON – John Ervin Dowe died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Summerton, with burial following in Ivory Cemetery in Davis Station, directed by People’s Funeral Home of Pamplico.
A public viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at King-Field Mortuary Chapel of Summerton.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Sharon Barno, 4100 Broad St., Lot 114 in Sumter.

The East Clarendon Athletic Booster Club will sponsor a Golf Ball Drop on Oct. 17 during halftime at the East Carolina v. Hannah-Pamplico football game, which will also be Senior Night.
The balls will be dropped via helicopter onto the practice3 football field, and the closest ball to the flag will win at least $1,000.
“We are doing this to raise money for our athletic teams,” said Freddie “Crash” Huth.

Marie Sweat, 50, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at her home, 1315 Bentley Court in Columbia.
Born May 25, 1964, in Manning, she was a daughter of Jeanette Scott Sweat and the late Ike Sweat.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 1226 Travis Lane in Manning.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting a two-vehicle wreck at the 117 mile-marker in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95. The wreck, which happened about 11:52 a.m. Monday, did not produce entrapment or injuries. Traffic may be slower during this time.

The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, 6439 Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, is offering the seasonal flu vaccine at no cost to veterans. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Veterans may visit primary care and outpatient clinics to get the shots by either scheduled appointments or by walk-in.
Walk-ins are also welcome at Dorn’s Mental Health clinics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Veterans who have not applied for VA health care should visit www.va.gov/healthbenefits/enroll.

ALCOLU – Ann Lumpkin Nelson Brunson, 81, widow of Ruthven Plowden Nelson Sr. and James Wesly Brunson, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at Covenant Place in Sumter.
Born March 9, 1933, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Bryan Hopkins Lumpkin Sr. and Francis Herren Lumpkin. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, a retired secretary and a member of New Harmony Presbyterian Church.

An 18-year-old Laurence Manning Academy student was killed and a 17-year-old Sumter boy was injured Saturday night in a wreck just outside of Anderson.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore told The Greenville News Sunday that John Henry Horton IV of Manning died at the scene of the wreck, which happened at U.S. 76 and Clemson Boulevard.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tony Keller said Horton was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup about 1.45 miles north of Anderson when he and a 22-year-old man driving a 1995 Buick collided. Horton’s vehicle overturned, and he was partially ejected, Keller said.
