hugo water 2hugo water 2Cynthia and Al Risher sent us these photos of a can of water donated in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. They saved the can as a “souvenir” of their survival of the storm. “We lived in West Ashley at the time, and Al was working at the shipyard the night Hugo came through, and I was teaching fourth grade out on John’s Island,” Cynthia said. “I remember telling my kids not to worry and that I would see them in the morning. Local students named Silver Medallion scholars at USC Sumter

usc sumterusc sumterSUMTER – Meredith Coker, Jacquelyn Lynn and Virginia Mason, all of Manning, were named Silver Medallion Scholars at the University of South Carolina Sumter for the 2013-14 school year. To qualify for inclusion, the student must have completed at least 30 hours at a USC campus with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0, and have achieved a 3.5-3.94 GPA for the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters while being registered each semester for 12 or more hours on the Sumter campus, of which at least six hours must be USC Sumter courses.  


Saints remain undefeated against Laurens

The Saints scored on the first drive of the game, then scored again after recovering a Crusader turnover to take a 16-0 lead. But Laurens regained momentum with a 56-yard touchdown run on its next possession. After three lightning delays and an hour-and-a-half delay, the Crusaders scored again on another long touch down run, this time for 67 yards. Travis McAdams named Gold Medallion Scholar for 2013-14 school year

usc sumterusc sumterSUMTER – Gable native Travis McAdams was named a Gold Medallion Scholar for the 2013-14 academic year at the University of South Carolina Sumter. To qualify for inclusion, students must have completed at least 30 hours at a USC campus, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, while also achieving a 3.95 GPA for the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters. Students must also be registered for 12 or more hours at the Sumter campus, with at least six hours of USC Sumter courses.

Born Aug. 9, 1909, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Flander and Bessie Sherod Blanding. The family will receive friends at the home, 1818 Appaloosa St. in Sumter. Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced later by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

Harmony Presbyterian fundraiser dinner
