Honoring Winners of the Lake Marion Artisans 2019 Art Competition

The Lake Marion Artisans in Summerton held a reception this week for the many local artists who participated in the 1stAnnual Lake Marion Artisans Gallery (LMAG) Art Competition. The winners of the competition were introduced, honored, and received a Blue Ribbon and substantial cash award.

Appropriately, the theme of this year’s LMAG 2019 Art Competition was ‘Lake Marion.’ There were two categories of artworks being judged; Painting and Photography. This meant the submitted paintings, sketches, photographs had to relate to Lake Marion, SC. The artworks Read the rest


Lake Marion Artisans to provide class

Clarendon County students in grades ninth through 12th are invited to take a new student class at the Lake Marion Artisans Gallery from 10 a.m. to noon daily from June 8-9 and 11-12. Ceramics instructor Judy Latham will lead the class, which is free. Materials will be provided, but students must commit to attending every class. The class is limited to the first 10 students to sign-up with name, phone number and email address at lakemarionartisans3@gmail.com. Classes will be held at Lake Marion Artisans Gallery, 108 Main St. in Summerton.


Lake Marion Artisans is more than just a museum

 

Lake Marion Artisans run a small museum on Main Street in Summerton, which shows and sells local artwork including paintings, sketches, jewelry and crafts. The items for sale are not consignments, however. All proceeds from sales go directly to the artists. Any monies the museum needs are garnered through donations and fundraising events, like the recent Summerton Super Saturday event. A small donation box also hangs on the wall in the Museum.

Scott’s Branch student sings, plays guitar during Lake Marion Artisans event

Summerton resident and Scott’s Branch High School student Angelo Wilder was on hand during a showing of students’ artwork Saturday at the Lake Marion Artisans Gallery in Summerton. The students’ work will remain on display for the entire month of February.


Lake Marion Artisans to feature Scott’s Branch students for Black History Month exhibit

The Lake Marion Artisans Art Gallery is hosting an art exhibit during Black History Month called “Generations: An Exhibit of Local African American Artists of All Ages.”
The exhibition will feature artistic creations from teens to seniors. Students at Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton have been working on art designed specifically for the show, and artisans from Summerton Senior Quilters will also display work in the exhibit.
Students from Tarleton Blackwell’s art classes have been working on portraits of famous African-Americans who have impacted black history.

Lake Marion Artisans hosting fundraiser for scholarship fund

The Lake Marion Artisans Guild is once again sponsoring a $500 college art scholarship to a local Clarendon County high school student.
The David and Shirley Manley Scholarship was first awarded in 2014. The Manleys moved to Summerton in 2006. David is retired from the U.S. Navy and Shirley from the federal government. Both had an interest in art and both joined the Lake Marion Artisans Guild in 2009.
David died in 2013 and Shirley passed in 2014. As a tribute to their love of art and each other, the guild started the scholarship award and this is their third … Read the rest

Teena Wilder selected for first Lake Marion Artisans’ scholarship

The Lake Marion Artisans announced Friday the recipient of the 1st David Manley Memorial Art Scholarship: Teena Hyashi Wilder. Wilder is a student of Scott’s Branch High School in Clarendon School District 1 and plans to attend Columbia College to continue her art education. A reception in her honor will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Marion Artisans gallery, 108 Main St. in Summerton.
Some of Teena’s artwork will be displayed at the Gallery during the month of May, along with the artwork of the Lake Marion Artisans.

Thank You From Second Chance

The Second Chance Animal Shelter’s 6th Annual Lasagna Dinner and Silent Auction was a sold-out success! Thanks to the excellent food prepared by Chef Ted Brownell, Sous Chef Steve Brazeau, and Rosemary Warner’s team of bakers—Barbara Adams, Kathy Brazeau, Clay Clark, Debi Fischer, Carol Gallagher, Carolyn Moynihan, Margaret Shreve, and Kathy Zeitschel—no one left hungry. Grant one of several students featured in exhibit

Scott’s Branch High School sophomore Rickia Grant stands proudly next to her portrait of Nelson Mandela. She said she chose him for her portrait because of his belief in freedom and his personal struggle against oppression. More art from the students will be on display at the Lake Marion Artisans gallery in Summerton throughout February in honor of Black History Month.


Fludd to be featured in student exhibit at art gallery

Scott’s Branch High School student Quanisha Fludd stands beside her portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday. Her work, as well as that of her fellow students, will be on isplay at the Lake Marion Artisans Gallery in Summerton throughout the month of February.


Letter: Thank you for making shelter golf tournament a success

Most of the 130 or so golfers at the Second Chance Animal Shelter Golf Classic luncheon probably had cell phones, but unfortunately, no one captured what was to many people the most exciting moment of the day.
As the winning ticket was drawn for the Margaritaville bicycle – generously donated by the local bicycle Corporation of America – a young man jumped up, let out a few shouts and waved his arms in the air as he held up the winning ticket.

Summerton strives for health

Summerton was abuzz the last Saturday morning in July as about 150 local residents attended the Summerton Health Fair at the Clarendon School District 1’s Community Resource Center on Fourth Street.
More than 20 organizations participated in the event, which was sponsored by the Lake Marion Artisans and presented free screenings, services and information to anyone interested in health and wellbeing.
The Summerton Health Fair was the brainchild of two gallery members, Nancy Foster and Marlise Guillerault, who felt it was a service badly needed in the community.

Summerton gallery hosts book signing

The Lake Marion Artisans Gallery hosted a book signing and reception Saturday for local author Vicki Wilkerson, who signed copies of “Sweet Tea and Time” and “Bikers and Pearls,” two of the books in her Summerbrook Series.
The Summerbrook novels are wholesome, inspirational stories about a group of girlfriends who navigate the changing landscape of life, love and family in Summerbrook, a fictitious small town in the south.
