Camp Woodie to hold writing contest for scholarship selection

Camp Woodie will hold a writing contest this year to select winners of its annual Joey Szorosy Scholarship, in memory of a young man who spent two years as a camper and one year as a counselor-in-training. Szorosy died March 25, 2018. He was 17. "Joey's parents have very generously donated (these scholarships) to send two children to Camp Woodie in honor and in memory of their son," said Tori Jordan with the S.C. Waterfowl Association, the organization responsible for the camp. One winner will receive a free week of junior camp - for ages 8-11 - and the other with will receive a free week of senior camp - ages 12-16. The contest is open to all children within those age ranges. To enter, the child must write an essay no less than 500 words about why he or she would like to have the opportunity to earn the scholarship for a week at Camp Woodie, and what that week at Camp Woodie would mean to them. "This essay must include the camper's name, age and an email address to contact should their essay be selected," said Jordan. The deadline is May 24. To submit an essay, email to campwoodie@scwa.org. Any submissions that are not emailed to this address will not be accepted.
