MANNING – Reverend Isom Bennie Turner, Jr., 84, husband of Vivian White Turner, died Monday, April 29, 2019, at McLeod Health Clarendon.

Born July 23, 1934, in Florence, he was a son of the late Isom Bennie Turner and the late Shelley McKay Strickland Turner. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and the founding pastor and member of Cornerstone Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. During his career, he helped build five additional churches and a school. Lady Saints defeat OP

The Clarendon Hall varsity softball team defeated Orangeburg Prep in Summerton on Monday by the score of 16-1 in tbree innings. Amberly Way picked up the win on the mound with 7 strikeouts and giving up 1 hit and 1 unearned run. Offensively, the Saints were led by Hannah and Bailey Corbett going 2-3 each. Lauren Pifer, Hannah Johndrow and Amberly Way were 1-2 each. H. Corbett led the Saints with 4 rbi’s and Pifer had 2 rbi’s. B. Corbett. Way and Johndrow had 1 rbi each.

Clarendon Hall fall in game one of the series to Richard Winn

The Saints of Clarendon Hall had their bats going, but were unable to capitalize. The Saints fall 10-3 to Richard Winn Academy.

This was game one of a best of three series in the SCISA 1A baseball playoffs. The Saints will be facing elimination tomorrow night.

LMA Varsity Clinches Lead in Fifth Inning to Defeat Augusta Christian

LMA Varsity Baseball snagged a late lead and defeated Augusta Christian 4-3 Monday. Augusta Christian opened up scoring in the first inning.  An error scored two runs for Augusta Christian.

LMA was able to knot the game up at two in the bottom of the third inning.  Andrew Boyd grounded out, scoring one run.

Boyd was the winning pitcher for LMA. He surrendered three runs on four hits over six innings, striking out eight.  Jake Jordan threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

East Clarendon wins their District Championship

The Wolverines of East Clarendon stomp Philip Simmons by a final score of 16-1 tonight. With this win the Wolverines varsity baseball team have punched their ticket to the Lower State Playoffs. Justin Evans lead the Wolverines with three hits in four at bats while driving in three and scoring two of his own. Kyle Odom was on the bump for East Clarendon. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out five in four innings of work.

The Lower State Playoffs will start Thursday night. East Clarendon will play their first game on the road.

Parker to attend Guilford College

Manning High School Senior Dierell Parker has committed to attend Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.  Parker’s plans are to major in Psychology for a master’s degree.  His back up plans are to go into studying law and get a bachelor’s degree. Parker is the son of Kendra Parker and Cory King.

Pansy Stone Oxendine, 58, wife of Bryan Lewis Swygert, died Monday, April 29, 2019, at her home.

Born January 28, 1961, in Hemingway, she was a daughter of the late Carlisle Winford Stone and the late Nora Lee Tilton Stone. She was a member of Cypress Forks Free Will Baptist Church.

Judge James Dingle, 89, has passed away

Judge James Dingle completed an entire career before many of his judicial contemporaries finished high school.
As an educator for more than 40 years with C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville, Dingle also served as a football coach; an athletics director; an industrial arts teacher; and as assistant high school administrator.
But when asked about his long career, he just smiles and has a simple answer.
“I was just a down home country boy who went off and made good and came back home to work in my community,” he told The Manning Times in 2016.

Lesslie Lynn “Les” Howeth, husband of the late Sandra Logan Howeth, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at his home in Manning, SC.

Les proudly served his country in both the Army and the Airforce in the Vietnam war and was active in his veterans group. He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as motorcycle enthusiasts who was known to also drive a race car when the chance presented.

Turner takes 2nd in SCISA Science Fair

Laurence Manning Academy student Alice Turner shows the second-place trophy she was awarded at the South Carolina Independent School Association Science Fair. The fair was held April 9 at the Sumter County Civic Center. Turner specifically took second place in the general science section of the senior division.
