Clarendon County Deputy safe after ordeal

While Clarendon County Sheriff’s deputies participated in the multi-county Operation Ice Storm, a Clarendon County deputy was dragged by a car when the driver refused to exit his vehicle. The deputy sustained abrasions and bruises on his hands and knees, along with a broken hand, and he hit his head as he was released from the car. The deputy returned to duty the following day after ensuring he did not have a concussion.

Manning High School sophomore Abby Richburg and junior Camryn Watford were the winners of Friday night’s Monarchs Dancing with the Stars, a benefit for the Monarch Athletic Club.


Vance man dies on I-95 in Thursday’s vehicle fatality

Marion Jerome Mack, 34, of Vance, died in an collision involving four vehicles around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14.

According to SC Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. David Jones, Mack was driving a 2003 Honda Accord south on I-95. Near mile marker 100, a flatbed tractor trailer hit a 2015 Toyota Camry, knocking the Camry into Mack’s Accord. The Accord then hit the back of a 2002 Ford F-350 truck.

“Marion Jerome Mack died at the scene,” said Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock. “Mack was ejected from the vehicle and died from multiple blunt force trauma.”

Lady Monarchs defeat Bishop England

The Manning High School varsity girls’ softball team defeated Bishop England 17-3. Abby Haney was winning pitcher allowing five hits and striking out three. Sierra Logan and Kailyn Vicente both went 2-3 at the plate. Abby Haney went 3-4. The Lady Monarchs are 1-1 in region play.

One killed in 4-car wreck

One person is dead after a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 late Thursday evening.
Lance Cpl. david Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol said the driver of a 2003 Honda Accord died about 8 p.m. Thursday after being hit from behind by a 2015 Toyota Camry, which was itself hit from behind by a flatbed tractor trailer truck. Jones said the Accord then hit the back of a 2002 Ford F-350 truck.
The victim’s name was not immediately available.
Jones said the drivers of the other three vehicles were uninjured.

I-95 southbound blocked

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting that traffic is blocked in both lanes of Interstate 95 after a wreck in the 100 mie marker area. No details were abialable on the wreck.

Shaffer requests, receives continuance in Federal court case

At 10:23 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, former Manning City Police Chief Gary Blair Shaffer, supported by his wife, who was also present, stood before Judge Brucie Hendrix at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Charleston.

Shaffer’s attorney, Cody Groeber, a Ninth Circuit Public Defender in Charleston, stated they are still awaiting portions of discovery and are still investigating what Groeber called misappropriation of funds.

To ensure time to receive all discovery and complete their investigation, thereby allowing preparation of a full defense, Groeber requested a continuance. Hendrix questioned Shaffer, and Shaffer confirmed he was willing to waive his rights to … Read the rest


JV Lady Swampcats defeat REL

The Laurence Manning Academy JV softball team defeated Robert E Lee Academy Wednesday night with a final score of 20-6. Gracyn Nalley was 3-4 with 4 RBIs, Laura Betts Brogdon was 3-4 with 4 RBIs and Anna Marie Beard was 4-4 with 3 RBIs.
Malorie Spiegel got the win in the circle, going the distance and striking out 7.


Fiat-Chrysler to recall 800K vehicles

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will recall 862,520 gasoline-powered vehicles in the United States that do not meet U.S. emissions standards, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday.
The recall, reported earlier by Reuters, was prompted by in-use emissions investigations conducted by the EPA and in-use testing conducted by Fiat Chrysler as required by U.S. regulations, the agency said.
EPA said it will continue to investigate other Fiat Chrysler vehicles that are potentially noncompliant and may become the subject of future recalls.
The recall includes 2011-2016 Dodge Journeys, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200s and Dodge Avengers, 2011-2012 Dodge Calibers and 2011-2016 Jeep Compass/Patriots.… Read the rest
