Thomas “Earl” Wilder, 64, died Sunday, March 24, 2019, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.
Born Sept. 19, 1954, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Birdy and Rebecca Johnson Wilder.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by King-Fields Mortuary of Summerton.


Welle elected to CCTC board

Manning City Councilwoman Sherry A. Welle has been unanimously elected to represent Clarendon County on the Central Carolina Technical College Foundation Board.
The board, which meets quarterly, is comprised of community leaders from Clarendon, Sumter, Lee and Kershaw counties. Welle will serve a term lasting through September 2021. Joining her on the board are Chris Lee and Dr. Scott Brown.
“I look forward to helping our county continue to provide educational opportunities for our students, “ Welle said in a post on social media. “They are our future.”
Welle’s first meeting with the board will be May 15.


MJHS group collecting donations for Disabilities Board, women’s shelter

The Manning Junior High School Girls for Pearls attempts at least one community service project per month.
For March, the group members decided to collect items for the clients of the Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.
Items Are also being gathered for the Jordan Crossroads Ministry Center – Haven of Rest for its shelter for battered women and children
The group will continue collecting items theough April 10 at the school, 1101 W.L. Hamilton Road in Manning.
Acceptable donations include liquid or pods dish detergent; notebook paper; notebooks; AA and AAA batteries; shampoo and conditioner; lotion; pillows; toothbrushes … Read the rest

John Earl Oneal Coard of 121 A. Green St. in Spring Lake, North Carolina, pleaded guilty March 18 to strong-armed robbery, receiving a sentence of four years in prisons, suspended to time-served and nine months’ probation. SBHS standout chosen for national basketball program

Scott’s Branch High School student Zakee Rendell was accepted last week into the 2019 Team USA Basketball Team program, according to a release from 365 Sports.
As part of the program, Rendell will attend the NCAA Exposure Boot Camp this summer and train with NBA professional trainers as a member of 365-Team USA. He will then continue on to the Bahamas to play in the Tropical Shootout Tournament.
Rendell was invited to participate, according to a release, based on “exceptional play and (his) dedication to the sport of basketball.”

Gabe Ballard Jr., 77, died Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Williamsburg Reginal Hospital in Kingstree.
Born Sept. 21, 1941 in the Jordan Section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Gabe Ballard Sr. and Gertrude Johnson Ballard.

Born May 6, 1948, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Christine W. Witherspoon.
Zena attended the public schools in Clarendon County and later became a proud member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Bethel AME Church.
